Notes for Hilyer Opaltrie Martin: It is believed that Matthew Martin came to America on Oglethorpe's Ship of Debtors in the 1700s. She was living with her daughter, Susie Hamilton in Indiana when she died. Her husband, Jay called her Hiddy. She was born almost blind, and later her eyes were burned and then she was declared legally blind. She went to a blind school in Georgia. She worked in a dairy to help raise her children. She died a week to 10 days after Bessie gave birth to Joe. Hilyer was working on a farm when she met Jay, who came to Georgia to visit a friend of his, who had the farm that Hilyer was working on at the time. |

Notes for Paul Dennis Courtney: He died at age 21 in an auto accident, he is buried in Farmington, GA, next to his father. He let home at 16 years of age to go into the Navy. He came back to see his relatives when he was 21 years old and was killed in a car accident in Detroit, Michigan. He was with a cousin who survived. ============================== Obit. from Georgia newspaper: KILLED IN DETROIT ----------------- Mr. and Mrs. Paul Martin and Mattie Martin Rucker attended funeral services of their nephew, Paul Dennis Courtney at Farmington last Thursday afternoon. The deceased was almost instantly killed in an automobile accident in Detroit, Mich. early Sunday ? 6th. He held a good position in Detroit where he had made his home with relatives for the past ?. His paternal uncle and aunt accompanied the remains from Detroit to his old home for the last sajourn. He was born just twenty on ? ago at Bostwick Georgia, was son of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Courtney and a grandson of the late John Martin. Besides his mother, he leaves three sisters and a brother to mourn his loss. Interment was in Farmington cemetery. |

Notes for Bessie Marie Courtney: Bessie wanted to go to college to become a nurse, but couldn't because of the depression. Bessie went to visit her Uncle Burnett Courtney in Union City, PA, sometime in the time period of 1920-1927. Bessie went to live in Detroit, Michigan with her Aunt Jennie Courtney Swan in October 1929, days after her brother, Paul Dennis Courtney's death. Aunt Jennie said that she could offer Bessie an education. Hilyer thought this would be a good chance for her daughter. Bessie when to Georgia during her summer vacations to visit with her family.
