Notes for Jay V. Courtney, Sr.: He is buried at Farmington Methodist Church in Farmington, Georgia. The funeral home was Hempley Undertaking. Age at death was 68 yrs. Jay was a widower when he married Hilyer. Jay and his daughter, Ethel, moved to Georgia in 1902, when Ethel was 10 yrs. old. As far as his place of birth, I have been told Titusville, PA, and Meadville, PA. In the 1870 Crawford County, PA census, he is listed as 11 years old living in Rockdale Township. Bessie said that her father would not tell what the V stood for in his name. Bessie said that there has been a James Courtney in every generation: This man is Jay Courtney, he has a brother named James. He was a dairy and vegetable farmer. He went to Georgia when he was 43 years old. Jay lived in Titusville, PA, and started the first oil refinery there. Courtney died at his home near Farmington, Ga., Sunday evening. He was 68 years old. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Hillyer Martin, of Madison, and five children, three girls and two boys - Mrs. Roy Cooper, of Athens, Ga.; Mr. J.V. Courtney, Jr., of Lumpkin Ga.; Mr. P. Dennis Courtney, of Union City, Pa.; Misses Susie and Bessie Courtney, of Farmington, Ga. One sister, Mrs. J. V. Swann, of Detroit, Mich., and one brother, Mr. Burnett Courtney, of Union City, Pa., and two grandsons, W. Roy Cooper, of Athens, Ga., and James Vernon Courtney, of Lumpkin, Ga., and several nieces and nephews. The pall bearers were Messrs. Lace Elder, John Pritchett, Tom Collie, Phil Barton, Dave Willioughby and Robert Bradshaw. Rev. G.T. Shell conducted the services at the Farmington Methodist church. Notes for Paul Dennis Courtney: He died at age 21 in an auto accident, he is buried in Farmington, GA, next to his father. He let home at 16 years of age to go into the Navy. He came back to see his relatives when he was 21 years old and was killed in a car accident in Detroit, Michigan. He was with a cousin who survived. ============================== Obit. from Georgia newspaper: KILLED IN DETROIT ----------------- Mr. and Mrs. Paul Martin and Mattie Martin Rucker attended funeral services of their nephew, Paul Dennis Courtney at Farmington last Thursday afternoon. The deceased was almost instantly killed in an automobile accident in Detroit, Mich. early Sunday ? 6th. He held a good position in Detroit where he had made his home with relatives for the past ?. His paternal uncle and aunt accompanied the remains from Detroit to his old home for the last sajourn. He was born just twenty on ? ago at Bostwick Georgia, was son of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Courtney and a grandson of the late John Martin. Besides his mother, he leaves three sisters and a brother to mourn his loss. Interment was in Farmington cemetery. |

Notes for Bessie Marie Courtney: Bessie wanted to go to college to become a nurse, but couldn't because of the depression. Bessie went to visit her Uncle Burnett Courtney in Union City, PA, sometime in the time period of 1920-1927. Bessie went to live in Detroit, Michigan with her Aunt Jennie Courtney Swan in October 1929, days after her brother, Paul Dennis Courtney's death. Aunt Jennie said that she could offer Bessie an education. Hilyer thought this would be a good chance for her daughter. Bessie when to Georgia during her summer vacations to visit with her family. She lived in Modesto 45 years. She retired in 1977 after a career as a bookkeeper for Stanislaus County. She is survived by her children, Jay Rea of Toledo, Ohio, John Rea of Girard, Pa., June Brooks of Pacifica, Joe Rudi of Escalon and Paul Rudi of Danville; and 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
