Manning Jones lived in the lower part of the community. He must have been a versatile man. He had a hatters shop, a tailors shop and a shoe shop. Besides these shops, he kept a flock of sheep to provide wool for his trade. He also had more than 2,000 acres of land and did extensive farming in his day.

Two or three times a year, he carried his products to Hamburg. They were sold or exchanged for things he needed.

Civil War Record--Enlisted at Greenville,SC 11-14-1862. 1st Lieut., Co. H, 3rd SC Reserves (90 days 1862-63). Capt. Co.B, 1st SC State Troops (6mos. 1863-1864). Died in Pickens District age 43. His widow, Nancy Jones, filed claim for settlement 1-26-1865--So. Car. Dept. of Archives and History, Columbia,SC 29611

Seven of Bennett's children were under age 16 when their father died which attests to the courage and stamina of their mother, Nancy, in keeping the large family together. Family unity was big in those days and it is entirely possible that Nancy received encouragement and support from Joel and Jane in the Jones family.

Bennett Jones who volunteered as a 16 year old boy for service in the Confederate War, owned a farm on the river. He did some farming and made molasses. He must have bought his land from Alex Edens.

ANDIVER S. JONES:
[vandiver jones.FTW]

Vandiver was a member of the 18th SC Rifles, Pendleton District, Pickens,SC

Van Jones owneds a large farm and had a home where Robert Morrris now lives. He married Adeline Edens, the daughter of Dr. Bill Edens. They reared a large crowd of children. He was noted for hisIrish wit and love of jokes.

The story is told of a couple who had a perfectly normal baby. Van told that the couple had a baby that was 12 inches between it's eyes. Of course, the story was repeated to the parents. The father was irate and got on to Van about telling such a tale. Van just laughed and told the man to go home and measure from one eye around to the other by the back of it's head. The man got his joke and didn't say any more.

Part of Van land was acquired by his son Mark Jones who married Elizabeth Keith.

Robert and Helen Morris and children, Jamie and Paula have a new brick home at the site of the old Van Jones Home.
