16 January 2000 Hi, Folks! I tried to do a little research last night... I was pouring over the census indexes... trying to figure out the HILLIS and HILLHOUSE connections! I really DO think that Andrew "Jackson" HILLIS may have been a HILLHOUSE [so to speak], or at least very closely related! Take a look at the census index information... Jackson stayed in or near the Giles Co,TN and Lauderdale Co,AL area, in both of his marriages. I gathered census index information for all of the "HILLIS" and "HILLHOUSE" listings in the states of Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky [where it is said that Jackson was born] from 1810-1840. The HILLHOUSE families have greater proximity to the areas where Jackson remained... and they appear to have given names [John, George, Robert] that are attached to the descendents of Jackson. Do any of you have access to the original census for these years? If so, can you send me the info/copy for the underlined entries? Info for 1820 is included in the info - and George, John, and Robert HILLHOUSE all have sons in Jackson's age bracket! Samuel HILLIS does not! Okay... so it is said that Jackson was born in Kentucky... take a look at the 1810 Census Index! All of the "HILLIS" and "HILLHOUSE" listings are in Kentucky - except for one! John HILLHOUSE apparently petitioned for land in Madison Co,Alabama... also a close proximity to Giles Co,Tennessee! This doesn't tell us that this John had actually already moved to Alabama... Maybe he was considering a move to Alabama even then... and was requesting permission to obtain land, in preparation for this! [Jackson was born 1815-1817]. We need to see if we can locate the records for this petition! In 1810, there is a David, James, and Robert D. HILLHOUSE in Livingston Co,KY [remember... Jackson's sons were named Robert Newton HILLIS, James Francis Lafayette Burton HILLIS, and George David HILLIS]. This should warrant looking into records for Livingston Co,Kentucky! These were the only "HILLHOUSE" families noted in all 3 states [AL, KY, TN]. Okay... 1840 Census Index: J. HILUS of Lauderdale Co,Alabama [Pg# 115].... This is Andrew "Jackson" HILLIS, right? He married in Lauderdale Co,AL in May 1840. So... who is this?! J. HILLHOUSE of Giles Co,Tennessee [Pg# 52]... we need to check on this one! This, and a John HILLES of Marshall Co,TN are the only ones near our area of interest... and there is only one HILLHOUSE [no HILLIS] remaining in Livingston Co,KY... a Peggy HILLHOUSE [Pg# 172]. Who is she? Apparently, she must be a widow... I plan to delve more into the census indexes of 1850-1880 [Jackson died 1878], time permitting - but let me know what you think! Do you think I'm on the right track? One person told me that they had visited HILLHOUSE Ancestral Homes overseas, and it was pronounced "HILLIS", even tho it was spelled HILLHOUSE.
