Response Notes: HILLHOUSE to HILLIS Subject: Re: HILLHOUSE to HILLIS! Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 12:12:28 -0800 (PST) From: Patricia Motes To: "M. HILLIS REAGOR" Hi Minnie and everyone, Three summers ago my sister and I went on a vacation to England and Scotland. One of our stops was at the bed-and-breakfast home of the Chief of Clan McKerrell of Hillhouse. The first day we were there, the head of the clan (who was as phoney as the day is long! - wore clan-plaid trousers...had clan-plan covers on his chairs) constantly referred to Hillhouse as Hillis/Hillus. Not to worry. By the time Gloria and I left, he was saying Hillhouse as well as we did!! And I know I've told this many, many times, but as a child I used to go with my father to visit his Uncle Presley. I thought that was a courtesy title (as I child I was definitely not allowed to address an adult by a first name, but if I saw the adult a lot I could address him as uncle - or her as aunt - and the first name) because all the "locals" in Minor Hill, TN called him Mr. Hillis. I was 10 or 12 before I realized that Uncle Presley was really my grandfather's brother, and the Hillis was spelled Hillhouse just like my name!! Other spellings I've found for HILLHOUSE, besides HILLIS, are HILLUS, HILHAUS, MILHOUSE (as in Richard Milhouse Nixon), and, of course, HELLHOUSE.
