-------- Original Message -------- Subject: HILLHOUSE? or HILLIS? Date: Sun, 31 Oct 1999 18:35:19 -0800 From: Chuck & Kathy Thurston To: minirea@swbell.net I saw your posted message asking the question. My lineage is from the HILLHOUSE side of the family. I do believe they are in fact the same line, and may stem from SAMUEL HILLIS HILLHOUSE who was born in the year 1692 of County Derry, Ireland. He is my 7th great-grandfather. I have corresponded with several other HILLIS' and we came to the same conclusion, though we were never able to actually link the two lines. If true, they were actually Scottish immigrants to Ireland, before coming the the states. One part of the lineage I am still trying to track down is the the Scottish Clan name, which was actually the MacKerrell Clan, otherwise known as "MacKerrell of Hillhouse". There is a castle there which is the ancestral home, and it is called "Hillhouse". My guess is as they immigrated out of Scotland, they simply changed their name to where they were from, in stead of using the Clan name. I have a few reference books on the HILLHOUSE family, and to tell you the truth, I wasn't looking for the name HILLIS. I will keep your e-mail address handy, and if I do find anything, I'll gladly send the info to you. Keep up the search... Charles R. Thurston crtklt@ix.netcom.com
