HILLIS REAGOR" Thanks, Minnie; Samuel spelled his name both ways. The pronunciation of "Hillhouse" in the Scots fashion would come out "Hillis" and at one time it was spelled "Hillhus." Only the Americans would want to accent both syllables as if it were two words. You know all about Samuel & William & all the others so I won't go into that, but there are several small places in Scotland called "Hillhouse" around Ayr. I don't believe MacKerrel of Hillhouse is as old as the family name. The clan MacKerrel is independant of the name Hillhouse -- it is just that they selected a place called Hillhouse to act as their clan seat. I talked to Pat Motes while I was in Tennessee just a couple of weeks ago and she had some interesting stories about her stay in Scotland involving MacKerrel. While I was there, Pat and I found the Hilllhouse Cemetery, long thought to be either a myth or plowed into oblivion. The headstones didn't have any discernable markings and it will take a lot of work to discover who is there. Unfortunately, Pat will have to rely on local assistance as most of us Hillhouse genealogists are somewhere else. Nice to hear from you again.
