BACKGROUND I am researching the family history of Jacob and Dorthea Haas. Jacob was born in the village of Krig, Szepes County, Hungary on March 19, 1868. He is the son of John (Johannes) Haas and Anna Zacher. Krig was a very small village located in what was known as Szepes County, now in the Slovak Republic. The population of Krig consisted of mostly ethnic Slovak residents although there were a few ethnic Germans as well. Szepes County also had an old historical German population. The population of Krig were generally either Roman-Catholic or Lutheran. The Lutherans generally worshipped in nearby Maldur. There were also Lutheran and Roman-Catholic parishes in nearby Toparcz and Totfalu. RESEARCH STATUS In January 2001 I visited The Genealogical Society of Utah (owned and operated by the Mormon Church of Later Day Saints) in Salt Lake City. The purpose of the visit was to research Hungarian (now Slovak Republic) parish birth, marriage, and death records. I had theorized to this point based on research I had performed on a number of Genealogical Web Sites and a copy of Jacob's social security application that he was in fact born in the village of Krig, Hungary. The objective of the visit was to find actual evidence to validate this theory. The LDS microfilms are broken by region, timeframe, and denomination. I was able to find the film containing all births in Roman-Catholic parishes (as Jacobs family was of this denomination) for the Krig, Szepes County area for the timeframe 1863-1904. These are not actual birth records but instead are baptismal records. I was very fortunate to find not only the entry for Jacobus, but also for his older brother Johannes. These records are actual film of hand recorded ledger sheet entries. UPDATE INFORMATION This is a read-only site. No updates can be made here.
