I have always had a keen interest in family history but it is not until recently that I have had the time or the real motivation needed to make some headway. Being a busy stay home mum of three my priorities have lay elsewhere! Until now.......
I started in earnest in January 2006 (after several aborted attempts in previous years). It has proven to an addictive and expensive hobby and at times VERY frustrating but overall very satisfactory and fun. For me it brings a sense of belonging, it also ensures that all the people before me, who made it possible for me to be here today, who made me the person I am today, are not forgotten, including the ones who died young. It has had quite a profound effect on me, I often forget that others sometimes do not quite share my passion for our history.
Along the way there have been many surprises - pleasant and otherwise and that is what makes it special. I have something so wonderful to share with family present and I will leave something for future generations. My son is already very interested and involved!
I haven't just stopped at my own history, I've started on my husbands (and my neighbours) and have also done my (half) brother and sisters'. It was a great moment to have the privilage to look through and confirm via a family bible for my sisters' Scottish heritage. It is really nice to be able to show my mum - who has always been so proud of her family but knew so little.
I couldn't have done so much without the patience of my family - my boys and husband. All the people who kindly put up my relentless questioning - Aunt Beryl (Herpe), Aunt Joan (Read), my mum H Sylvia, my sister Pam, various newly found distant "relatives" - Debbie Menk, Janet Stevenson, Denise Teal (nee Herpe - deceased Oct 2006) and my apologies to anyone else who has helped and I've not mentioned. Much appreciation and respect to you all. Also all those people who I've contacted on the "off chance" and who have so kindly responded.
This will constantly be a works in progress - I will carry on adding the new generations and searching out the old. I am happy to share information but please ask before taking the information, it has taken much work and love to get this far, I would appreciate talking with you if you feel we have a connection!
