Notes for J
OHN RECORD:

The RECORDS are from a very early Plymouth, Massachusetts family. The name RECORD has been spelled and indexed together in many ways, including Rickard, Recoard, and Richard but those who settled in Buckfield, Maine in 1797 were from Pembroke, Bridgewater and Easton, Massachusetts.

John Record was in Weymouth, Mass. in 1676, as a soldier on the Connecticut River in Philip's War of 1676. " (Hist, of Hingham v. 3: 124)

This line can be proved, but in the absence of positive proof, Giles Rickard may be the father of John Record.

Giles Rickard was born either in Wales or England in 1597 and married Judith Cogan in 1622. Judith was the daughter of Henry and Joan (Boridge) Cogan and was bpt. at the church of St. Magdalene, at Tounton, Co. Somerset England on the 13 June 1594. Judith married (1) William Kinge. Kinge died in 1618 in Taunton, and the widow Judith (Cogan) Kinge married (2) Giles Rickard on 7 Jan. 1623 in West Hatch Somerset, England. (Mayflower Desc. V. 11;115). Judith and Giles sailed to Plymouth in 1638 and she died at Plymouth 6 Feb. 1661/1662. She was the mother of all his children. Giles married (2) Joan Tilson and (3) Hannah Churchill, a widow. Giles was a freeman constable and surveyor and a large land owner. He died at age 87 in Feb., 1684 probably at Plymouth.

These are notes from a book done by DOROTHY (RECORD) WILSON and her sister MARILYN (RECORD) FAIRCHILD. The book was printed in 1986 and is The Genealogy and History of the RECORD FAMILY with over one hundred immigrant ancestors who arrived in Plymouth before 1650 including two Mayflower passengers JOHN ALDEN and FRANCIS COOKE.

1 George Lincoln's "History of Hingham (1982) Vol. III, P. 124 records: "John Rec ord, from Weymouth, was a soldier in King Philip's War, 1676. He afterwards cam e to Hingham and married there, 26 Aug 1677, Mrs. Hanna (Burr) Hobart, wid. of John
Hobart, and dau. of Simon & Hester Burr, bap. in Hingham 25 Feb 1654/55, d. 12 Oct 1683 in her 29th year. He probably returned to Weymouth after the dea th of his wife, and may have had issue by a later marriage."
The record of his service in the King Philip's War is found in the NEGHR (Jul 1889) Vol. XL, pps . 264 to 273. Garrissoned at Hadley, John Records, 24 Jul 1676, 9/0/0; and assi gnment of wages 24 Aug 1676, Weymouth Town, John Record, L4. 0s.
0d.
John Rec ord is next found in Marshfield. On 25 Jun 1697, John Records of Marshfield, Pl ymouth Co., purchased for L6. 10s. from "Jeremiah Mumatogue & Abigail his wife, which was the dau. of Josiah Wampatock, sachem, deceased," of
Mattakeesett ( Later Duxbury and Pembroke) "bounded on the Northeast by the common lands of ma rshfield and Duxbury." This deed was recorded 11 Jun 1699
On 22 Apr 1700 John Record of Marshfield conveyed this land back to Jeremiah Mumatogue in exchange for another tract in namassakeesett (part of Duxbury) and for an additional con sideration of L6. 14s. 11d. the first of these two deeds was
recorded 1 May 1 700 and the second 8 May 1700.
Although John Record was "of Marshfield" in 169 0-1700, he was probably living in that area included in the town of Pembroke wh en the town was established 21 Mar 1712 from parts of Marshfield & Duxbury. He was probably living there as early
as 1692 when his son Thomas, was born. Thus on 1 Apr 1712, when he sold to Ebenezer Bishop "26 acres lying in Pembroke and was the 68th lot in the upper division of marshfield along the Duxbury line",
John Record m. secondly, Grace (--?--) as shown by his will of 1713 and by th e births of their children in Pembroke, 1692-1712. He d. in Pembroke 23 Jan 171 3/14. In his will dated 9 Nov 1713 and probated 22 Feb 1713/14, he mentioned h is
wife, Grace, and left everything "to her suppot and the bringing up of his children." He named his wife to be his executrix and his friend Capt. Stephen O tis and his son Thomas Record to be overseers of his will. Witnesses were Josia h Foster,
Ephraim Keen & Thomas Parris. in the inventory of his estate taken 5 Mar 1713/14 by (James?) Bishop and Ephraim Keen there is a list of debts due the estate, among them being one of John Record (prob. his son) for L2. 15s.
The foregoing records provide sufficient evidence for believing that the John R ecord of Hingham in 1677-1682 was identical with John Record of Marshfield, 169 7, and later of Pembroke. First, John and Grace named no son John; he already h ad
a son by that name by his first wife, Hannah. Secondly, by making his will as he did, leaving everything to his wife, Grace, for the bringing up of the ch ildren, he avoided mentioning by name his children by either wife as legatees b y his will.
Thirdly, among the debts due his estate there was one due by a Joh n Record. that person was probably his son. Another reason to support this beli ef, as will appear later, is the fact that the names Simon & Jonathan, which we re Burr names, were
used as names of children of John's wife, Grace, and their descendants.
John's wid. Grace m. in Pembroke 31 Jan 1714/15, Thomas Parris. Thomas Parris' first wife, Abigail, d. in Pembroke 11 Dec 1713. They had seven children all b. in Pembroke betw. 1697 & 1712.
On 6 Sep 1726 "Thomas Parris o f Pembroke ....yeoman, and Grace Parris, his wife, late wid. of John Records, l ate of Pembroke" sold for L100. to "her son Joseph Records and Elisha records o f Pembroke and for the good will and motherly
affection that she bears towards her two sons, and fore their many charges and troubles towards supporting thei r mother's younger children . . one hundred and fifty acres more or less, with ye buildings thereon, heretofore ye estate of ye

Notes for G
RACE:
Reg. of Deeds, Plym., Vol. 23-59. Grace Parris to Joseph Records, Grace Parris, late widow of John Records, late of Pembroke, Mass., now wife of Thomas Parris of Pembroke, 6th Sept., 1726

Thomas Parris m. 3d, Grace Record, Jan. 31, 1714-15, widow of John Record of Pembroke; m. by Rev. Daniel Lewis of Pembroke.

He was selectman of Duxbury in 1710. The west part of that town was incorporated Pembroke, March 21, 1712. In 1713 he was town clerk of the latter town. In 1716 he was again chosen to that office and continued as clerk to 1733. In 1722 was selectman and constable in 1738. He was the first school teacher in Pembroke, 1712. He had lands and a dwelling east of Pembroke Town Hall, before 1706, as shown by deed to Abraham Pierce, and bounded by Thomas Parris land, and path to his house. There is nothing on record at Plymouth of purchase or disposal of his home place, but by discription of deed of 1706, and one of 1730 it is a safe conclusion that he lived on the Gideon T. White place, and more recently known as the Nath'l Besse place. The road from the Town Hall going east to the above place, was without doubt the path from Thomas Parris to the Meeting House as given in deed of 1730. There is no record of settlement of his estate; yet he was a land holder to considerable extent, and deeds of transfer from him are found. He died in Pembroke, Mass., in 1752. (See John Rogers gen. by J. H. Drummond. His widow, Grace Parris, d. before March, 1754. See settlement of her estate.)
