Local Census of 1838, Lothersdale, Yorkshire ============================================ In preparation for the new church which was being built under the inspiration of Mr John Benson Sidgwick he felt it necessary to know whom he might consider probable worshippers and he undertook the compilation of a local census on 10th July, 1838. He made a few notes of Quakers and Methodists, and where he noticed real poverty he left 1/- [one shilling]. [In 1838 the largest households were those of Wm Smith of Norrod (11), Mr Spencer of Raygill (12), Thos Throup of Oakcliffe (12) and J B Sidgwick Esq. of Stone Gappe (14).] It was during the period that John Benson Sidgwick was resident at Stone Gappe that Charlotte Bronte was governess to his children and attended the church - for which she made an altar cloth. It is probable that she visited Kildwick Church on many occasions, where she would see the numerous Currer memorials; and it is quite within the realms of possibility that her pen name of Currer Bell was derived from such source.
