In these fast-moving times, it is refreshing to pause for a moment and let one's mind wander over the lives of past generations of ancestors.

We know our line goes back to a James Goodwin. He lived in Ireland in the mid-eighteenth century. We also know that he attended "the Church of England. This indicates that his family was of English origin. It is not known for certain which part of England they came from although some say Liverpool.

It is not too difficult to search for ancestors in this country; however, it becomes expensive when searching in the mother country. A search in Ireland is almost impossible. Some of the Irish records were lost in a fire in 1882 and the remainder was burned during the civil war of 1822. England holds more promise at least back to 1536 when they started keeping parish records. However, before this a search is difficult due to the few publications. Another possibility is tracing a family through Coats of Arms. King Henry V decreed in 1468 that none would be allowed to use coats except by right of ancestor or greatness of deed.
