Francis Swilling (b. 1904)
Notes for Francis Swilling:
Frank and his wife, Jennie Bell, lived in and around St. Mary's Hospital, built and owned by Dr. R. L. Smith.Jennie Bell was surgical nurse and her sister, Ellen, was Head Nurse and lived part-time with Dr. Smith in one of the hospital rooms.Frank was executor of his father's estate which included a farm originally owned by his grandfather and grandmother, Jonathan and Frances Swilling.Frank and Jennie Bell became addicted to drugs that only Dr. Smith could supply and Dr. Smith, Ellen, and Dr. Louis Smith, his son, were also apparently using drugs. The doctors kept a careful account of the drugs they were giving Frank and Jennie Bell and soon demanded their money.Frank signed the farm over to Dr. Smith. The 120 acre farm on the intersection of the Arkansas River and the Illinois Bayou was purchased by Jonathan and Frances White Swilling in 1861.It had been in the family almost 100 years. The house that Frank's mother and father built during the "Great Depression" and lived in was on a knoll overlooking the intersection. After the Dardanelle Dam was built and the lake formed, Keith Cogswell, a Russellville merchantbuilt a house on the point (knoll) where they had lived.Part of the upland, "Bunker Hill," now has an atomic generating plant on it.
