Leslie Bicknell was born on July 24, 1892, the son of Homer and Edith Ingersoll Bicknell on a farm near Sullivan, Indiana. His parents were farmers. his mother lived on the same farm from birth until a few years before death. He had two brothers, one still living, Harvey Bicknell, a horticulturist of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Leslie attended a country school having two years of high school when he quit to farm with his father and neighbors.

Iva Osburn Bicknell was born on March 19,1897, the daughter of Robert and Lou Etta Osburn who were farmers and later lived one quarter mile from Leslie's parents farm near Sullivan, Indiana. She had one sister who died in 1938. She graduated from high school in 1915. She often walked to school with Leslie's younger brother who said he was going to marry her if Leslie did not.

Leslie and Iva were married on February 6, 1916 and were tenant farmers in Sullivan County, Indiana.

Leslie attended and joined the First Christian Church near Graysville, Indiana in 1914 and was baptized in Turman's creek in very cold spring weather and had to go some distance to a relative's home for removal of his clothes.

Iva attended and joined the same church in 1912 and was likewise baptized in Turman's creek. She played the church pump organ and at the age of 12 was called upon to play the organ for an Evangelist when an emergency arose by the regular organist becoming ill.

Iva took piano lessons from her sister and often substituted for her sister in giving lessons. She is ambidextrous and found near equal ability playing the base notes with her right hand and the treble notes with her left hand.

Leslie and Iva moved to Hammond, Indiana where he worked for the Standard Oil Company from 1920 to 1957. He worked in a refinery pressure still where fuel oil was changed to gasoline earning 50 cents an hour when he started. He worked 8 hours a day and 6 days a week for years. He had several narrow escapes in explosions, once his co-worker was killed by an explosion. They were fortunate during the depression as Leslie never lost a days work.

Iva's mother came to live with them for the last years of her life. They rented homes and finally bought a home at 1130 Indiana street where their oldest daughter and family now live.

They had six children in this home and spend their summer holidays in it as guests of their daughter and family.

Ina Bicknell was born in 1917 and married Joseph Tolley who is on a disability pension from Social Security. They have two sons.

Robert Nelson Bicknell was born in 1918 and lives at 1132 Indiana street, Hammond, Indiana. They have two sons and two daughters. He is employed at Standard Oil.

Hazel was born in 1923 and married Joseph Reed who is employed at Standard Oil and they reside in Calumet City, Illinois. They have one son and three daughters.

A son was born to them who lived only twenty two days.

Virginia was born in 1925 and married William Adams, who is an Engineer on the Indiana Harbor Belt railroad and they live in Schererville, Indiana. They have two boys and two daughters.

Leslie and Iva are very proud of their 5 children, 20 grand children and 16 great grand children. When Leslie fell and broke his hip last summer the big family kept the hospital busy calling on Leslie.

Leslie retired in 1957, 18 years ago and they purchased a small travel trailer and toured the west visiting California and Arizona and driving as far north as Canada. They spent 6 weeks in Death Valley and 6 weeks in Yellowstone National Park in trailer parks.

Their first trip to Florida was in 1956 before retirement and liking it here they made their winter time home here ever since.

They attended First Christian Church on 12th avenue and 13th street and became associate members in May 1965.

Leslie and Iva have sung in the choir for many years but their health prevents them from doing so now. Iva plays the piano for the Sunday School.

Leslie fell when visiting in Indiana on June 28, 1974 breaking his hip. An artificial hip was placed and he recovered without being put in a cast. He tries not to permit this injury to be a handicap to him.

They live in a trailer home on lot 112 in the Avon Air Mobile Court on the south Trail for the last 18 years and enjoy the family life of all their friends about them. They hope to stay here the coming summer

First Christian Church is very fortunate to have them as members.

Leslie worked for the Standard Oil Co. in Whiting, IN. from 1920 until he retired in 1957. He had only completed two years of high school. I found him in the 1900 census for Sullivan Co., IN. and it shows Leslie having a middle initial (I.).

Buried at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, Lake Co., Indiana, Section 5, Garden of Devotion, Plot #257 D-1.
