1. John Reed/Reid (John 1). Born on 16 Mar 1633 in Dorchester, England. John died in Norwalk, Conn in 1730; he was 96.
John was commissioned as an officer in the Parliamentarion army under Cromwell circa 1649. At the Resotration of King Charles II, in 1660, John departed England, settling in Providence, R.I. Then he moved to Norwalk Connecticut 1684 marrying the widow Anne Derby. He set up a large home on the eastern side of Five Mile River, two miles upstream from Long Island Sound. Family tradition suggests that John have been granted Arms in the new world, emblazoned "Gules, on a bend nublee, argent, three shovelers, azure, Crest, a stag's head, reased, proper, ducally gorged. Family was possibly of Scottish origin. His house was used as a meeting house. re: Ann Derby Widow of Francis Derby of Warwick, R.I. Austin's Gen.Dict.R.I, p.65. She had red hair and was 39 years younger than he (john Reed) and was the mother of his children. After she died, John married a Mrs. Scoffield Of Stamford, Conn.

They had the following children:
      i. John (2)
      ii. Thomas (1672-1757)
      iii. William
      iv. Mary
      v. Abigail

Many of these facts are supported by the book "History of Wayne County, Pennsylvania" by Phineas G. Goodrich, (Gateway Press, Inc. Baltimore 1992), in which Dwight Reed has a prominent article mentioning his family history.

This book mentions a possible reason (aside from, and in addition to, the prospect of greater freedom) for John to leave England as being because of opposition of an older brother to his proposed marriage.
***************

John Reed was a Captain in Cromwell's army. Tradition has it that he came to America because of his elder brother's interference in matrimonial affairs. He settled first in Providence, RI, in 1660. He removed to Norwalk, CT in 1684, after purchasing a large tract of land there. He built his house on a little rise of ground on the eastern side of Five Mile river, north of the old post road and nearly two miles from Long Island sound. He died at the age of 97 and was buried on his own field.
The above is copied from a book entitled "Reed-Read Lineage, Capt. John Reed of Providence, R. I., and Norwalk, Conn., and his descendants through his sons John and Thomas. 1660-1909," by Ella Reed- Wright. published in 1909.

Also information comes from "Ezra Reed and Esther Edgerton Their life and Ancestry" by Charles E. Benton. Published in 1912.
