Unlike in the United States where buildings are periodically torn down to make way for the new, the buildings in Europe are preserved on the outside even though the insides have been gutted and modernized. (For instance, our hotel in Salzburg was 600 years old.) Many of the old city centers in Europe look as they did hundreds of years ago. Zurich is no exception.
