1. William B.¹ Benton was born March 05, 1859, and died June 27, 1935. He married Martha B. Sliger September 1878 in Meigs County, Tennessee. She was born September 20, 1856, and died December 19, 1942.

TRANQUILITY METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY, McMinn County, Tennessee

Tranquility Cemetery is located ten miles northwest of Athens, TN. Take I-75
north to exit 52. Left on State Road 305 north, approximately 5.8 miles. Turn
right on County Road 220, .1 mile on left. Tranquility was established in 1850
on account of a division in the church nearby which was of same denomination.
The land was given by Mr. Noah Buttram for both, the Church and Cemetery. The
first person who was buried here was Rev. L. Wilson on Oct. 27, 1850. There are
one hundred and sixty four unmarked graves according to the 1940 inscription
list done by Mrs. Reba Boyer and this book can be found in the McMinn County
Library.

Special thanks goes to Mary Ratledge and Eula Rogers for their knowledge of the
families that are buried in Tranquility Cemetery. On August 29, 1997, Mary
Ratledge, Eula Rogers, Marvin and Samme Templin reviewed the cemetery for
updated tombstone inscriptions. What we found was that many more tombstones had
deteriorated and there are now approximately 190 unmarked graves. Some of the
names listed do not have marked tombstones but came from the 1940 list. These
are marked with "**".

Mary Ratledge and Samme Templin are granddaughters of John and Annie Carpenter,
great granddaughters of William and Permelia Carpenter, great great
granddaughters of Cyril and Rhoda Carpenter, and great great great
granddaughters of Timothy and Hannah Carpenter, all of whom are buried at
Tranquility Cemetery.
