John immigrated to the US about 1848 and settled in Brooklyn, New York before coming to Wales Township, Michigan.
When John Miller moved to Wales Township, Michigan, between 1855-58, he spoke very little English. He opened a Tinsmith shop in Memphis but didn't suceed at it because of the language barrier. When his wife died, John was overcome with grief. He visited her grave every day. One day he didn't come home. When his family found him, he had comitted suicide upon his wife's grave in Lambs.

Death Certificate states date of death August 30, 1894.

John Miller's sister Christine (Christiana) either came to the US with him or followed later, for she is found married to Robert Theile of Prussia and appears in the 1870 Wales Township, Michigan census.
