Descendants of James Reeves

1. JAMES¹ REEVES was born Abt. 1766 in Rowan County, North Carolina, and died 1820 in North Carolina. He married ELIZABETH "BETTY" WELLS January 11, 1785 in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Notes for JAMES REEVES:
On March 1, 1790, President George Washington signed into law the first Census Act of the United States of America. The responsibility for determining the manner in which the first complete listing of the inhabitants of the country was to be compiled was placed upon the president himself. Although historians are still not certain exactly what method the president used, it is commonly assumed that he delegated the major responsibility for its enactment to the marshalls of the several existing judicial districts.
The instructions in the law were to ascertain the number of inhabitants of each county or district in the thirteen states that existed at the time; to indicate the sex and color of these persons; and to enumerate the free males sixteen years of age and over. Indians, not being taxed, were not included, and a careful distinction was made between free inhabitants and slaves (including indentured servants bound to service for only a short period of time). Although the Constitution called only for a simple enumeration of the inhabitants of the land, the census of 1790 was undoubtedly used to obtain knowledge of the military strength and industrial potential of the country.
The actual compiling of the census was a very difficult and often dangerous task. Enormous areas of the eastern portion of the country were still wilderness and even in the most heavily populated areas, transportation was primitive and unreliable. As a result, the schedules obtained in this first census were not altogether consistent in their content and form.

In the 1790 census for the district of Morgan in North Carolina, are listed three Reeves households. One is James Reeves, believed to be the Sidney James Reeves married to Elizabeth Wells, the second is Isaac Reeves, believed to be his father, and the third a John Reeves, assumed to be his brother.

According to the "Heritage of Old Buncombe County "Vol 1 .. 1981" for
family # 536 it tell about James Reeves. James Reeves married Betty wells
daughter of Newman Wright Wells. It also says 3 of his known children are
Jackson Reeves., Malachia Reeves b 1782 and Wells Reeves b 1809 and died 1887.

Notes from "Reeves Review Book II"
"He sold 650 acres in Buncombe, North Carolina to Benjamin Hardley on Sandy Mush Creek. Bk. B, p. 122. Also on August 5, 1810 he sold to Joseph Larkin another 650 acres on Sandy Mush. His son Jesse, is known to have had two sisters and a brother who accompanied him on the move from Tennessee to Missouri. His family in the 1820 Census of Buncombe county shows him over 45; with two males 10-15; two females under 10; one female over 45; with two males under 5; one male 15-20; two males 5-10; one female 5-10; and one female over 45."

James was the only Reeves in the District Buncombe was formed in 1791 from parts of Burke and Rutherford.

The 1830 census shows an older man, age 60-70 living son Malachi's household. This could possibly have been Sidney James Reeves, putting his birthdate between 1760-1770.

Notes for ELIZABETH "BETTY" WELLS:
If Elizabeth Wells Reeves is related to the John Wells of Sandymush or Newman/Nunam Wells of Haywood County, she was probably born in Delaware around 1765-1770. John Wells (b. 1776) reported DE as his birthstate in 1850 and Newman's son Andrew gave DE as his father's birthstate in 1880.
