Reeses of Georgia

Updated June 18, 2006

Hugh Rees/Reese Sr., B. 1742; died 1825, is my 3rd great grandfather. My direct Reese ancestors are Hugh, Moses Sr., Matthew E., William Freeman and Luther Alvin.

Research I have found states Hugh Sr. and his siblings were born in Virginia and migrated to Georgia. Hugh and his descendents lived in Columbia, Warren, Glascock and McDuffie counties (McDuffie was split off Columbia, Warren & Wilkes Counties in 1870), GA. Hugh's will is on file in Columbia County Courthouse, Appling, GA. I have a copy and it can probably be found on the internet.

Hugh, his third wife, and at least two other family members are buried about one mile south of the Thomson-Washington, GA highway on land now owned by Dudley Nursery, Thomson, GA. The small private cemetery is badly overgrown with only three of four headstones present. I have photos of existing headstones.

Information in my files is derived from immediate family members, census reports, cemeteries and internet postings found. You should do your own verification. If anyone finds an error I will appreciate you forwarding me a correction to

I will also greatly appreciate any information you my have that will further flesh out my files.

I have not been able to determine when Moses Sr. died, or where he is buried. Nor do I have date of death of Matthew, or where he is buried. Perhaps someone can help me with this information.
