  Notes for GERALD REID:
Gerald is buried in St Chad's Church following is the text of a wonderful letter written by Reverend Mary Dawson in response to my enquiry about Gerald's grave. I would like to publicly thank Revd Dawson for her kindness and the amount of effort that she went to in order to answer my letter.

Revd Mary Dawson
The Vicarage, 1 Stoney Lane,
Glentworth,
Gainsborough.

Please accept my apologies for this rather late reply to your letter of 3rd April but I have tried to answer your questions as fully as possible and that has taken time. I hope you don't mind my addressing you as Colin but having discovered as much as I could about your brother I feel I know your family!

My efforts on your behalf have involved contact with the County Archives in Lincoln, the District Registrar in Gainsborough and the RAF Chaplains' Department, as well as checking my own registers. The information I have gained seems scanty but I hope you will find it useful.

I enclose copies of the birth and death certificates for Gerald. He was born on 12th March 1947 only six and a half months from his conception and died twelve hours later on 13th March at home. The winter of 1947 was the hardest in living memory in this area and there are many stories told of the deep snow, the freezing temperatures and the hardships of the first three months of that year. The service register at Harpswell reads "January 26th to March 9th no services. Heavy snow storms and roads completely blocked making it impossible for me to reach Harpswell. " It may have been therefore that your mother was simply unable to have received the medical treatment which could have prevented
such an early delivery, even if medical science were sufficiently advanced to have offered such treatment. However, it does appear that your father went to Gainsborough himself to register the death.

Gerald was buried at Harpswell Parish Church which was used for all RAF burials at that time as Hemswell Churchyard was almost full and Harpswell Church was nearer to the base. (RAF Hemswell was originally called RAF Harpswell.) His funeral was conducted by the then Vicar, The Revd P W Richardson. Sadly I have no record of the location of the grave. At that time few churches had a
proper graveyard plan. Neither was it the custom at that time to erect any memorials to small children - it was felt that the sight of such things would distress mothers. It is indeed unusual to find that burial even recorded in the burial register, which suggests that Revd Richardson did show an unusual degree of care by contemporary standards, even if it seems horrifying at
this distance. I have not been able to trace Gerald's baptism but I think it highly likely that he was baptised, perhaps by a midwife or some woman who helped your mother as was the custom for children in danger of death. Revd Richardson would probably have allowed his burial in "his" churchyard even if unbaptised but would not have conducted a funeral service or recorded the fact. ( I seem to be telling you an awful lot of background information but I feel that it may help you - if not, forgive my waffling.)

I enclose few photographs that I have taken over the past couple of weeks which I felt might interest you. My camera is not brilliant but neither am I! I enclose some pictures of Harpswell Church, exterior and interior. This church is kept permanently open so the candlesticks had been pinched two days earlier, hence the peculiar look to the altar. Harpswell is a tiny village of about 50 people, most of whom live on little farms around so this is a very countrified church. It is set on a hill and is a Saxon foundation, as you may realise from looking at its tower.

I also enclose some photographs of the RAF memorial. The old RAF station is now called Hemswell Cliff and is partly used for army housing. The blocks and most of the land were sold off to a local entrepreneur who has set up a flourishing trading estate which includes the largest antiques centre in Europe. There is a school which serves both the army and the children from the houses which were sold off as private housing as well as as children from the surrounding villages.

Finally there are some pictures of the Mayday Dancing at Hemswell. Hemswell is one of the few villages to have a permanent Maypole so this is pure showing off on my part.

I am so sorry that I cannot locate Gerald's grave for you and so you cannot erect a headstone. (You might like to consider an alternative memorial.) I can however assure you that he rests in a lovely country churchyard and that he has been in the thoughts and prayers of his parish priest since I received your letter. If you would like me to, I will also include him in our memorial service for all who have died recently when we hold the service in November. It will be at All Saints, Hemswell. If you ever ,visit these parts, please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to show you Harpswell, its church and the nearby base. If I can be of any further service please contact me.
