Story of the Cornice
In Sep. 99, while visiting cousin Mary "Jean" (Freshwaters) Robertson in Washington, IA, I drove the 6 miles north to the Pleasant Plains Cemetery. This cemetery is located on the north end of what was once Alexander Gibson and William A. Gibson’s farm, located on Section 19, Jackson TWP, Washington Co., IA, T76N-R7W.
This farm is owned by Harold and Verlee Wylie. Sometime after buying the farm, the Wylie’s tore down Alexander Gibson's second farm home which the Gibson's built soon after thier first farm home was destroyed by the Tornado of 22 May 1873.
After finishing my research at the Plains Cemetery, I went over to Wylie’s new brick farm home, to talk to Harold. We talked about the farm buildings, he explained which buildings would have been on the farm when my grandfather William A. Gibson and family lived there in 1908. Harold happened to think that he had some Doors, Glass Transoms, and two old Cornices in the old Gibson garage. Harold had removed these items from Alexander’s old farm home and saved them. He asked if I wanted any of these items, and I was happy to take the 2 cornices. I gave one to cousin Jean Robertson in Washington, IA, and this is a picture of my cornice. What a find, and keepsake!
