[I think this date should be 28 Oct 1861?] d. 12 Sep. 1913 Age 51. Dad was 23, Mother was 16 not 17 until the following Oct. Ellen b. 24 Jul. 1879 - 61 was married 07 Aug 1906, hus. Charles b. 21 Nov 1868 Fred b. 25 Jun 1880 - 60 Annie b. 08 May 1884 - died 28 Aug 1884 Harry b. 30 May 1893 - 47 Ralph b. 21 Apr 1903 37 Harry also lists his Dad as the 5th. chd. in family, but did not list Charles Reid #207 the 4th chd. --------------- "Charles is listed in the 1850 US Census of Lockport, Niagara Co., NY, age 3yrs., and he listed again in the 1860 US Census, of Lockport, Niagara Co., NY, age 12yrs. -------------------- Have picture of the Asa Reid's home in Wash. Iowa. The Picture was sent to me by Edna L. Jones of Washington Gen. Soc. She says the org. location was at the intersection of South Ave D. and West Madision St. It was moved appx. 1930, to 700 block on Monroe St., corner of Ave. G., next to Sunset Park. It was built by Prof. McKee, of the old Washington Academy, later called the McKee School. -------------------- Asa was an expert with horses he started as a boy in Lockport working with his father who was a horse trainer, dealer in fancy horses, and a teamster. At age 23, and newly married, his father had just died, Asa keep the family business going for 2 yrs to support his wife, new baby, and mother. ------------------- By 1880 they had a 2nd baby, and Asa was working as Stableman for Dr. E.W. Grant a Journalist living in Lockport. -------------------- The family is listed in the 01 Jun 1880 U.S. census of Lockport, Niagara Co., James is not listed, only Eunise age 55, Asa age 25, Anna age 18, and baby Ellen age 11 months. Harry writes, "Dad, (Asa) went from Buffalo, N.Y. to IND. about 1890. To Washington, IA. 1893, then to Hampton, IA, back to Washington, IA. to live about Mar. 1902, then to Bloomington, IL in fall 1906, until Oct or Nov 1913." Asa then made his home in Washington, IA. In his older years he lived for periods with his children, Jack, Ellen, Fred, and Harry. One move not mentioned, was when family moved from Lockport, NY to Buffalo, NY abt. 1882. ------------------ Washington, was known as one of the best horse markets in the Midwest, and Asa had worked there buying horses and decided to move there. The family moved about 1901 to Washington, Iowa. They also live in Hampton Iowa and Bloomington, Ill. The family returned to Washington, after the death of his wife in 1913. During his active years in the Midwest, and before the horse market devolved due to the gasoline engine, Asa had good business. -------------------- The following info is from the Wash., Iowa, City Directory, found in the Genealogy Section of Washington, Iowa Public Library. Dir. date 1903: Reid, Asa age 48, horse dealer, 319 S. Ave. D, wife Anna age 42, Children, Ellen age 24, Fred age 23, clothier, Harry age 10 and baby Ralph age 2 mo. Dir. date 1910 & 1911: Part of family members moved, and did not show on directory or census. --------------------- The following info is from the Wash., Iowa, City Directory, found in the Genealogy Section of Washington, Iowa Public Library. Dir. date 1917: Reid, Asa age 62, clerk at the Congress hotel, E. Main St. 1st block, Ralph P. Reid age 14, student, living at 514 W. Madison, the home of the widow Mrs. Mary "Auntie" Young and her daughters who were b. in Iowa, Lovisa age 12 and Losena age 10. The census lists her husband as Robert S.
