Descendants of James Findlay

Generation No. 2

2. JAMES2 FINDLAY (JAMES1) was born 1799 in Barony p., Lanarkshire, Scotland, and died 1864 in Waterdown, Ontario. He married MARGARET FINLAY March 27, 1837 in Pittenweem, Fifeshire, Scotland.

Notes for JAMES FINDLAY:
From an East Fife newspaper, detailing events in Pittenweem, May 6, 1864:
DEATH OF THE REV. JAMES FINDLAY.--- The Rev. James Findlay, formerly minister of the United Presbyterian Church here, died on the 25th January last, at the Manse of Waterdown in Canada. Mr. Findlay was born in the Barony parish, near Glasgow, in 1799, and entered the Glasgow University in 1813, where he pursued his studies with great diligence and ardour. In 1818 he entered Divinity Hall of the same University, and at the expiration of the usual course of collegiate study he was licensed to preach the gospel in connection with the Relief Church. In 1827 he was ordained over what was then the Relief Church here, where he remained until 1839, when he proceeded to America. On his arrival there he was settled as pastor of the congregation of Princetown and West Galloway, in the State of New York. He remained there until after the disruption of the Church of Canada, when he went to that province and was settled as paastor of the congregation at Dalhousie in 1846. He demitted his charge there in 1850, and afterwards laboured at Whitby and Mitchell till 1861, when he accepted a call from the church at Waterdown and Wellington Square, where he died, as above-mentioned, in the 65th year of his age. Mr. Findlay was possessed of no mean talents as a preacher, and his ministerial labours in Canada were much appreciated by the congregations under his charge.

Notes for MARGARET FINLAY:
She was possibly born in Pittenweem.

Children of JAMES FINDLAY and MARGARET FINLAY are:

  i.   JAMES3 FINDLAY, b. 1837.

3. ii.   ALLAN FINDLAY, b. 1841, Watertown, New York.
