He was originally named Allan Stephens Findlay, but then that name was changed. His family moved from Saskatchewan to Owen Sound and then to Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1929 and on to Guelph, Ontario in 1937. He went to Dalhousie University and was a Rhodes scholar, then went to Oxford University in England and later became a lawyer.

When her family moved from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Guelph in the spring of 1937, she attended Edgehill Ladies' School in Windsor, Nova Scotia to finish off her year. Her sister Marian was her teacher in some subjects and she had to call her "Miss Findlay". After her family was in Guelph for a while, she attended Branksome Hall School (January to June 1940) in Toronto and again had her sister Marian as a teacher, whom she had to call "Miss Findlay" again! She worked as a secretary before her marriage. There is a romantic story of an engagement ring in a champagne glass at the dinner at which Graham proposed to her. At her wedding, her nieces Marion and Carol Findlay were flower girls. The reception was at the Guelph Country Club.
