Our Ohio & Kentucky Settlers
Our Ohio & Kentucky SettlersUpdated May 11, 2006 | Patricia Hulit Reid |
Michal Witmer, our known Swiss ancestor came to America from Rotterdam with three of his four sons, Peter, Ulrich, & Hans. They sailed on the Ship Hope and arrived in Philedelphia PA in 1733.The fourth son had arrived one year earlier in 1732 on the Ship Pennsylvania. The WITMER clan settled in Lancaster Co. PA. Our direct known son, David M. Witmer, his wife Catharine Garmon,& eight month old daughter came to OHIO abt."the Fall of 1853 or Spring of 1854". Information about the early Witmer clan began after the Witmer Reunion in 1825.Charles Lindecamp, husband of Emma Witmer documented the data after this Reunion. From this data located in my father's file I have continued the research.I have been able to validate most of that data. Timothy HULIT was born abt. 1719 in East Windsor, Middlesex Co., NJ. another ancestor. James Hulit, son of George Hulit, Anna Dye his wife, & six children migrated to PA abt. 1815.It appears that Anna may have died, not validated.James, some of his married children, came to Richland Co. Ohio. James & Jane Bartlow are found in Richland Co., OHIO abt. 1830. Wales has been reported to be the location of the Hulit immigrants--NOT VALIDATED to date. In 1968, my father published for the family a document w/names, births, deaths, marriage dates & tidbits about the early descendents of James Hulit. I have been able to validate most of his work and have continued the search for our kin. Our German ancestors came to Fayette Co., PA--the Johann Nicklaus FAST clan. Christian Fast migrated to OHIO as early as 1817 to become one of the first Orange Township, Richland Co., OHIO pioneers. Most of this information is located on the Fast Family site in My Family.com Over the past year, I have been researching the maternal side of my family, CAMPBELL, COLWELL, COUCH, BAKER, as well as PENNINGTON--"My Kentucky Heritage". My PENNINGTON lineage has been known in our family since 1985 Family Reunion.I belong to Group VII PRA--direct line to Micajah, Sr., b.1743.--with DNA confirmation. The CAMPBELL line is not all validated to date, but a beginning!!Our CAMPBELL clan arrived in 1726 through Philadelphia and settled in "Lancaster Co., PA"; i. e., John CAMPBELL,"Immigrant Father", wife Grace "Grissel" Hay, with almost all of the family. One son, Patrick "the eldest son" more than likely remained in Ireland for his wife to give birth to their fourth son, Patrick, Jr. in 1726.They came to America and took the "Importation Oath" in 1740, Orange Co., VA.I have been able to trace the family til about the 1780 to 1800 time period--then I get lost with too many John Campbell in and around Washington Co., VA.I do know that John Campbell m.Polly Couch, came through the "Pound" Gap from "Ashe Co., VA from Irish Settlement in NC" (which could be around Washington Co., VA) to Campbell Creek, Perry Co., KY.The family, through my grandparents, remained there until the 1950s. |
