John D. Remick was a farmer. He moved from Kittery, ME to Milton, NH, and was there with wife Abra "Abbie" Applebee shortly before his Army service when their first children were born. He served in the Army in 1814 as a private with Capt. William Carson's Company. He moved to Carroll in Coos County, NH about 1824, settling on the east side of Cherry Mountain near Thomas Applebee. John left Carroll and settled on Lot 5, Range 3. As his sons grew up, they purchased land at Lot 5, Range 4. [History of Town of Jefferson, NH, 1733-1927, Evans]
John married twice, both wives being Applebee sisters (Abra and Mary). The date of John's second marriage to Mary Applebee has not been found. Neither has the date and circumstances of the end of his first marriage to Abra, although Abra Remick reportedly remarried in 1836. [Early Marriages of Strafford County, NH Supplement 1630-1870 by Robert Canney, p. 213]

Information on the large number of children of John and Abra Remick has been acquired from a variety of sources-- vital records, census records, cemetery records, town histories, etc. There has been much inconsistency in dates of birth and children's names in these records, to the extent that there may even be one child listed here under two different names. The children are listed in the most likely order of their birth, and where conflicts exist, the most logical and consistent date of birth has been entered.

Notes for Abra Applebee:
Col. Alexander Worster m. 25 Oct 1836, Abra (Applebee) Remick, widow of John, daughter of Thomas. [Early Marriages of Strafford Co, NH, Robert Canney, p. 213] This reference incorrectly lists John as deceased in 1836.

Notes for Mary Applebee:
Mary, age 79, was living with son, Amos in Jefferson in the 1870 Census. Mary was age 83 and still living in Jefferson with Amos, in the 1880 Census, having aged only four years since 1870.
