The first REMICK recorded in America was Christian Remick (Remich) who was mentioned in records of Kittery, Maine in 1651. No account has been found to confirm whether Christian was indeed an immigrant, and if so, where he came from. It IS apparent from early records that Christian was born about 1631, and was still alive in 1718. He married Hannah _____ , and they had four sons and five daughters. It is from these four sons-- Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, and Joshua-- that most of the REMICKs in the US today are descended. The five daughters married Gowell, Dixon, Green, Wixham, and Cole, and produced a wealth of additional descendants.

My full REMICK database is not online, but I will gladly share information on the 7000+ individuals in it with researchers and family members who wish to contact me. This database also contains information on other immigrants to America whose surname was REMICK, or whose changed the spelling of their surname to REMICK after they became settled. Several REMICK families that arrived in America in the mid-1800's settled in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and Wisconsin.

My information on early Remicks in Europe is limited, and research there has been beyond the scope of my work. The town of Remich, Luxembourg is an attractive prospect for the origin of the surname, but there is no evidence that Christian Remick came from there. Luxembourg church records from his time and before were destroyed in subsequent wars. LDS/IGI records list several Remick families in 17th and 18th century England who could have been relatives of Christian. They were mostly in Padstow, Port Isaac, and St. Endellion, in Cornwall. Unfortunately, comprehensive local records from these towns prior to 1684 don't seem to be available.

My REMICK database contains over 7000 names. Many of my information gaps involve living REMICKs, their immediate relatives, and other REMICKs born since the 1900. I am always working toward bringing the early lines up to date by linking the 300+ Remick families living in the US today. If you have a REMICK connection, I would be glad to hear from you, especially if you have never contacted me before during the 30+ years I have been assembling this database. I may be able to confirm (or disprove) family recollections about your REMICK ancestors, and maybe provide you with some interesting information on who your direct ancestors were back to the 1600's.

I have data on several better known REMICKs, including the late actress, Lee Remick. Many REMICKs will be disappointed to learn that, although they have the same last name, they are NOT "cousins" of Lee Remick. Her great grandparents came here from Ireland in the mid-1800's, and thus are not directly descended from Christian Remick, as far as I can tell. Other REMICKs were well known as shipbuilders, musicians, and artists. The mother of the Smothers Brothers was a REMICK and Dick Smothers' middle name is REMICK.

I recently have added a genealogy report on the Remick's of Coos County, New Hampshire, descendants of John Remick (1782-1864) who settled there after moving from Kittery, Maine.

  • A look at the page owner (9 KB)
This is your host, Bruce Remick. I was born in Rhode Island and am a 10th generation descendant of Christian Remick. If you look like me, we must be related!
  • Christian Remick Gravesite, Eliot, Maine (22 KB)
This is the plot containing the memorial marker for Christian Remick and several of his descendants. It is on a slope on the north side of Pleasant Ave. underneath a large powerline. The marker is surrounded by an iron fence.
  • Christian Remick's Gravestone (10 KB)
This is one side of Christian's stone. Although this site is where he originally settled, the actual location of his grave is unknown. The marker was commissioned in the late 1800's by Lieut. Oliver P. Remick, a descendant and family genealogist.
  • Four Generations of My Ancestors (61 KB)
My father, Herbert Mortin Remick (1904-1982), grandfather, Herbert Woodbury Remick (1876-1959), great-grandfather, Herbert Alonzo Remick (1851-1930), and great-great grandmother, Annie Cook (Graffam) Remick (1822-1922).
  • Christian Remick's Signature (2 KB)
This is a sample of Christian Remick's signature as found on a 17th century document. Is it an "h" or a "k"?
  • Who was the namesake for this REMICK product? (109 KB)
I recently discovered that the Remick here was George Everett Remick (1867-1947), born in Trenton, IL. He was a chemist and was credited with the development in 1903 of the Bensonizer Lung Cure, a "cure" for tuberculosis. The two products shown were his efforts. A number of his descendants are alive today. I wonder how many are aware of their "famous" ancestor?
  • Levi Remick's legacy (88 KB)
Levi Remick (1811-1878) of Kittery, ME inscribed this worn US large cent (1793-96) with "LEVI REMICK 1837". He was an officer in the 27th NH Regt militia 1835-38 and representative in the Kittery legislature 1855-56.
