In the early 1980’s we did much Renick research before the advent of computers and the Internet.  We published a booklet at that time, and what follows is a portion of that book. There is still confusion on the early (1700’s) Renick ancestors, and I am not sure there will ever be enough evidence to draw absolute conclusions.  In the past 20 years, some have made the claim of a link to an older ancestor, but to date, I am no more certain of the earlier generational lines than I was at the time of our original research.

THE RENICK FAMILY HISTORY

By: Tom & Betty Renick

HISTORY OF  THE RENICK NAME

European family names came into being around the twelfth century as the population increased, and it has been suggested that a family's last name came from a man's occupation, a physical characteristic such as Short, a combination of father's first name and relationship such as Johnson, or a location or area.

The RENICK name -- which has been spelled as Renwick, Rennick, Rennock, Rennicks, Renix and Reynick -- comes most recently from a location in the Cumberland County area in England near the Scotland border called Renwick.  Around the mid-to-southern part of Scotland or the "lowlands, " many towns bear the suffix of "wick" such as Berwick, Ainwick and Harwick.

In pronouncing Renwick, (in the British Isles) the “w” is silent, and by the time the Scotch Irish Renicks came to America in the early 1700's, the "w" had already been dropped. Some Renwicks who came directly from Scotland retained the spelling of Renwick, at least in the beginning.   Some immigrants from Ireland in the 1800’s were spelling the name Rennick.

The variety of spellings of the Renick name seems to be primarily a result of poor spelling by record keepers and census takers.

Recorded coats-of -arms which were painted on shields were used in Europe in the middle ages to identify families, but no old record of a coat-of -arms has been located for Renwick.

Two recent coats-of-arms for English families have been located. One family is in the southern part of England, and the other is from the Northumberland area (near the Renwick area). This Renwick family operates a successful shipping business, and their coat-of -arms has a horse galloping on a field at the bottom; two sailing ships on top with a raised hand between; above the shield is a griffin-type head; the motto reads: For True Liberty.

HISTORICAL MIGRATION PRIOR TO 1600

It appears fairly certain that the Renwicks were living in the lowlands of Scotland, at least 400 to 500 years ago. As mentioned by several ancestors, word-of -mouth has suggested the Renicks were once the Wicks of Germany and that when they moved to the Rhine River area, they became the Reinwicks. They later migrated to England or Scotland because of religious persecution. This German ancestry suggestion seems fairly consistent among many Renicks. One relative mentioned that there is a Rennick castle on the Rhine River in Germany today.

POLITICAL / RELIGIOUS CLIMATE OF THE 1600'S IN SCOTLAND

In Scotland the reformation began in the 1500's with John Knox, founder of the Presbyterian faith, as the most outspoken leader against the Catholic faith. The kings of England then tried to force the Scot reformers to conform to worship practices of the Church of England (Anglican or Episcopal) in order to have a uniform church. In 1625, Charles I tried to impose uniform worship practices which fueled much discontent, and in 1637, when he tried to impose a new liturgy, a riot broke out at the St. Giles Cathedral. On February 28, 1638, the National Covenant was signed, pledging the signers to maintain their chosen forms of worship and church government (Presbyterian). These people became known as Covenanters. A period of Civil wars ensued and Presb3terians were tortured, imprisoned or killed.

RENICK ANCESTORS IN SCOTLAND

Probably the most famous Renick ancestor in Scotland was James Renwick who lead the Covenanters who disowned the authority of the king to impose the Church of England on the Scots. His followers were often called "Renwickites.

He was captured and executed in 1688. There is a monument with an inscription bearing his name at the Greyfriers Church Yard at Edinburgh where he is buried.

A contemporary of and possibly a relative of James Renwick was John Renwick who refused to take an oath of allegiance to the king and was imprisoned. He was also a Covenanter. He was among 100 "prisoners" who sailed on the 'Henry & Francis' in 1685 to New Jersey. After arriving, these "prisoners' refused to become indentured servants, and after winning a court case, were sent into Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut

RENICKS IN IRELAND

In 1609, prior to the religious wars and persecutions in Scotland, England had established the Ulster Plantation in northern Ireland in order to bring over a strong Protestant element to Catholic Ireland. The lands were taken away from the Irish and given to Scottish or English people, and so began the protestant/Catholic problems of Northern Ireland which continue today.

Although the Scots and Irish lived together for several generations, they neither mingled nor intermarried. However, in 1704, England passed legislation aimed at Catholics, but also, because of a sacramental test, excluded Presbyterians from holding public office. There were also crop failures, suppression of trade and escalation of rents.

The Scotch-Irish immigration to America (1714 -1750) began at this time. Scots who had left Scotland for Ireland found that they were not welcome in Ireland and began another exodus to the New World.

The first traceable Renick ancestor (George) came in 1719 from Enniskillen, Ulster, Ireland to Pennsylvania.

SCOTCH-IRISH MIGRATION TO AMERICA

The migration from Ireland took most to the shores of New Jersey or Delaware where they were not particularly welcomed.

Scotch-Irish migrants have been described as "Bible-believing tradesmen who liked their whiskey. " The migratory pattern was from the Atlantic Coast into western Pennsylvania and then along the eastern part of the Allegheny Mountains into Virginia. They then pushed westward into Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio in the early days of settlement (1740's to 1820's).

Ohio and Kentucky lands were given for various reasons such as payment for military service or a willingness to provide a line of defense from the Indians. The Scotch-Irish were tough fighters who were willing to tackle the settling of un-cleared lands. These early Scotch-Irish settlers have been described by Marcus Wilson Jernegan in his Epochs of American History  "The Presbyterian Scotch Irish . . . were militant, political minded and jealous of their political rights. Their clergy generally were educated, promoters of education and of civil and religious liberty . . The Scotch-Irish element, owing to its numbers, its inherited antagonism, and attitude, toward England; because of its religion, settlement on the frontier, militancy, love of liberty, and the character of its  clergy, was one of the most important in the colonies. From the Scotch-Irish came some famous political leaders, east and west, such as Patrick Henry and Andrew Jackson.”

RENICKS IN AMERICA

Family tradition which was recorded by William Renick (born 1804) in his "Memoirs, Correspondence and Reminiscences of William Renick" (Circleville, Ohio, 1880) reveals the early migration of the Renick Family to America. He said that the Renicks migrated from Germany to Scotland to escape religious persecution and that the name changed from Rinewicke to Renwick. Part of the family moved from Scotland to Colerain County, Ireland. At that time there was a father and three brothers; one brother was created a peer of the realm and agreed to purchase the land of the other two. The father and two brothers sailed to America, It is believed that the two sons were George and Thomas Renick who settled in Pennsylvania in the early 1700's (however, it seems that George came over in 1719 and Thomas in 1733, so there is a discrepancy).

It is known for sure that George was in Pennsylvania about 1719 because in a record of a land grant dated January 25, 1730-1731, it is reported that "George Renick, late of Inniskillen having about eleven years since arrived in this province  . . . which would make his arrival around 1719.

Thomas' arrival date is believed to be 1733; this would be substantiated by the fact that his sons born in 1725 and 1730 were born in Ireland. At any rate, there were two Renicks (George and Thomas) in Pennsylvania by 1733, believed to be brothers, and we do know their children's names and other information about them.

George Renick was probably born in the late 1600's in Ireland. He had three sons and one

daughter -- Robert, Thomas, William and Elizabeth. George and his family owned 1000 acres

in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on the Susquehanna, Sohataroe and Paxtang Rivers in 1730.

George was active in a Presbyterian congregation in 1734 and helped secure the services of a

minister who served the Derry and Paxtang congregations for awhile.

There is a date of death (1737) for a George Renick in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

In 1738, the original land tract in Pennsylvania was divided among Thomas, Robert and Thomas

(perhaps George's brother or it could be an error and it should read William). George's daughter, Elizabeth, married Robert Polke at the Presbyterian Church in Abington, Pennsylvania on January 2, 1724. They went to Augusta County, Virginia around 1738 and had a family of nine children.

W hen the Renick brothers sold the Pennsylvania land in 1740, they apparently all went to Virginia.

Thomas had at least two sons, Samuel and George and others.

On August 14, 1748, Thomas Renick obtained 270 acres in Frederick County Virginia on the

Wappacomo or Great Southern Branch of the Potomac River.  In 1766, 200 acres of land in

Hampshire County, Virginia, previously owned by Thomas was deeded to George Renick (believed

to be Thomas’ son).  It is believed that his son George (grandson to Thomas's father George) is the

father to William of Hampshire County who was the father to George who went to Clark County,

Kentucky.

Little information is available about the brother William (son of first George) probably because

there were so many Williams existing at the same time.  The Pennsylvania Gazette of October 4,

1739, reports that a William Renick was an assessor for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  This

William could be the ancestor of the Renicks of Ohio who came from Hampshire County

(two brothers, John and William) but there is no proof of this.

The third son (of the first George), Robert, and his descendents are the Greenbrier County, (W)VA

Renicks.  Robert was married to Elizabeth Archer, and they went to Virginia around 1740.

Robert Renick was in the Virginia militia and quickly advanced through the ranks. He was granted

300 acres in the part of Orange County, Virginia, designated Augusq on June 15, 1745.

As a Captain of Horse he was active in "Indian troubles and in 1757, he was killed by

a party of Shawnees. His pregnant wife and children, William, Joshua, Nancy, Thomas,

Betsy, Margaret and Robert, were captured by the Indians. Two children, Betsy and Robert,

died in captivity and one child (RobertII) was born in captivity. The family was finally

released in 1767 as part of Boquet's treaty with the Ohio Indians.

Two of the boys captured by the Indians, William and Thomas were among the first settlers of

Greenbrier County, (W) Va. where there is a small town named Renick.

William had no children, but Thomas' son, Robert, moved to Ohio in 1803 and settled in the

Clark Gounty (Springfield) Ohio area.

Many of the other Greenbrier Renicks joined the westward movement and intermarried with other

branches of Renicks.

The other first generation Renick believed to be the brother to the first George,

Thomas, came to America in 1733, and not as much is known about the descendants of Thomas.

It is known that he owned 326 acres on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania and a 28 acre

island in the river. He operated a ferry to the island. We only know of one son, William, who was

born in Ireland in 1704 and who died in 1762 (will probated 1-5-1763) in Paxtang, Pa.

There are some missing pieces to the Renick puzzle and some questions unanswered.  On occasion, where indicated, we have suggested lineage because of other information available, but all information is based on personal statements or existing documents we have examined or received from other researchers.

                1.  George1 Renick was born Abt. 1690 in Ireland, and died Abt. 1740.

Notes for George Renick:

"An Early Settler on the Susquehanna: Whereas George Renick, late of Iniskillen, having about eleven years since arrived in the province with the first settlers of Donegal, yet has never obtained leave to settle on any of the proprietor's lands, without which leave he never would presume to attempt it, and being now desirous that himself and three sons, William, Thomas, and Robert and his son-in-law, Robert Polke, might be allowed to settle down on some tract together in one neighbourhood, I therefore think it advisable that pursuant to his request he and his said sons and son-in-law be suffered to enter on the quantity of one thousand acres, near Susquehanna, between Sohataroe and Pextan, and that the same may be marked out to him and his said sons in a regular tract by the surveyor of Lancaster county or his order at the said George's charge, upon this express condition, that he and his said sons and son-in-law shall comply with such terms as shall be proposed by the proprietors or their agents, when lands in those parts shall be granted, or other wise shall quietly quitt the same. Dated at Stenton, the 25th day of January, 1730-1.                                                                JAMES LOGAN

Lett him begin on Susquehanna at least two miles above Soharatoe, running a proper distance back, and he may take in any settlement that is only begun and not actually inhabited. J.L."

                2.  Robert2 Renick (George1) was born Abt. 1710, and died July 25, 1757 in Killed by Shawnee Indians.  He married Elizabeth Archer Abt. 1741.  She was born Abt. 1725 in Greenbrier Co, VA dgtr Sampson & Rebecca (Thompson) Archer, and died Abt. 1809.

Notes for Robert Renick:

pp. 89-91 in "Chronicles of Border Warfare" by Alexander Scott Withers ('A

New Edition' edited & annotated by Reuben Gold Thwaites, Secretary of the

Wisconsin Historical Society 1895)

"In the summer of 1761, about sixty Shawnee warriors penetrated the

settlements on James river.  To avoid the fort at the mouth of Looney's

creek, on this river, they passed through Bowen's gap in Purgatory mountain,

in the night; and ascending Purgatory creek, killed Thomas Perry, Joseph

Dennis and his child and made prisoner his wife, Hannah Dennis.  They then

proceeded to the house of Robert Renix, where they captured Mrs. Renix, (a

daughter of Sampson Archer) and her five children, William, Robert, Thomas,

Joshua and Betsy -- Mr. Renix not being at home.  They then went to the

house of Thomas Smith, where Renix was; and shot and scalped him and Smith;

and took with them, Mrs. Smith and Sally Jew, a white servant girl.  (There

is a footnote added at this point by  Lyman Copeland Draper):  The name is

Renick.  Robert Renick, who was killed on the occasion referred to, was a

man of character and influence in his day.  His name appears on Capt. John

Smith's company roll of Augusta militia as early as 1742; and four years

later, he was lieutenant of a mounted company of August militia.  Instead of

1761, the captivity of the Renick family occurred July 25, 1757, as shown by

the Preston Register, which states that Renick and another were killed on

that day -- Mrs. Renick and seven children, and a Mrs. Dennis captured; and

the same day, at Craig's Creek, one man was killed and two wounded.  The

Renick traditions state that Mrs. Renick had only five children when taken;

and one born after reaching the Indian towns; and corrects some other

statements not properly related in Wither's narrative of the affair.)

Wither's narrative continues:  William and Audley Maxwell, and George

Matthews, (afterwards governor of Georgia,) were then going to Smith's

house; and hearing the report of the guns, supposed that there was a

shooting match.  But when they rode to the front of the house and saw the

dead bodies of Smith and Renix lying in the yard, they discovered their

mistake; and contemplating for a moment the awful spectacle, wheeled to ride

back.  At this instant several guns were fired at them; fortunately without

doing any execution except the cutting off the club of Mr. Matthews' cue.

The door of the house was then suddenly opened; the Indians rushed out and

raising the war cry, several of them fired -- Audley Maxwell was slightly

wounded in the arm.  It appeared afterwards, that the Indians had seen

Matthews and the Maxwells coming; and that some of them had crowded into the

house, while the others with the prisoners went to the north side of it, and

concealed themselves behind some fallen timber.  Mrs. Renix, after she was

restored to her friends in 1766, stated that she was sitting tied, in the

midst of four Indians, who laying their guns on a log, took deliberate aim

at Matthews; the others firing at the Maxwells -- The sudden wheeling of

their horses no doubt saved the lives of all three.   The Indians divided,

and twenty of them taking the prisoners, the plunder and some horses which

they had stolen, set off by the way of Jackson's river, for the Ohio; the

remainder started towards Cedar creek, with the ostensible view of

committing further depredations.  But Matthews and the Maxwells had sounded

the alarm, and the whole settlement were soon collected at Paul's stockade

fort, at the Big spring near to Springfield.  Here the women and children

were left to be defended by Audley Maxwell and five other men; while the

others, forming a party of twenty-two, with George Matthews at their head,

set out in quest of the enemy.  The Indians were soon overtaken, and after a

severe engagement, were forced to give ground.  Matthews and his party

followed in pursuit, as far as Purgatory creek; but the night being very

dark in consequence of a continued rain, the fugitives effected an escape;

and overtaking their comrades with the prisoners and plunder, on the next

evening, at the forks of the James and Cowpasture rivers, proceeded to Ohio

without further molestation.  When Matthews and his men, on the morning

succeeding the engagement, returned to the field of battle, they found nine

Indians dead; whom they buried on the spot.  Benjamin Smith, Thomas Maury

and the father of Sally Jew, were the only persons of Matthews' party who

were killed -- these, together with those who had been murdered on the

preceding day, were buried near the fork of a branch, in (what is now) the

meadow of Thomas Cross, Sr.  In Boquet's treaty with the Ohio Indians, it

was stipulated that the whites detained by them in captivity were to be

brought in and redeemed.  In compliance with this stipulation, Mrs. Renix

was brought to Staunton in 1767 and ransomed, together with two of her sons,

William, the late Col. Renix of Greenbrier, and Robert, also of

Greenbrier -- Betsy, her daughter, had died on the Miami.  Thomas returned

in 1783, but soon after removed and settled, on the Scioto, near

Chillicothe.  Joshua never came back; he took an Indian wife and became a

Chief among the Miamies -- he amassed a considerable fortune and died near

Detroit in 1810"

Robert Renick was described as a mature man when he came to Virginia in

1740.  He is described as a man of charter and influence in his day.  In

Chalkey, Vol. 1, page 76, records of Agusta County, is found this entry

illustrated of the repute of Robert Renick:  June 17, 1757.  This was just a

month before his death.  John Smith's will presented.  Robert Renick, the

remaining witness proved it, and the cout, knowing the signature of testator

and witness, it is recorded.  His name appears on Capt. John Smith's roll of

Augsta Militia as early as 1742, and four years later, Feb. 19, 1746, he was

commissioned Lieutent of Horse, and on Aug. 19, 1752, Capt. of Troops.  He

was wounded at Braddock's defeat July 9,  1756.

The Virginia records show that on June 10, 1740, Robert Renick received a

patent to 400 acers of land on the Buffalo Lick Branch in Augusta County,

Va.  and on Nov. 10, 1757, Robert Renick obtained a patent to 90 acers on

Puratory Creek, a branch of the James River.

The records of Agusta County show that the grantee wrote his name Renick.

This signature is attached to a conveyance of May 25, 1747, to James Miles

for 201 acers  on the Buffalo Branch, " being part of the land Robert Renick

now lives on; and to one Feb. 14, 1748, to Silas Hart for 199 acers, part of

400 acers granted to Robert Renick by patent dated June 10, 1740' amd to one

of Nov. 25, 1751, to --- (name illegiable ) for 300 acers on 'a head branch

of Cedar Creek, a branch of James River at a place called the timber plain.

" Nov. 6,1751, John Harrison conveyed to this Renick 241 acers of land in

Agusta County.

This is the Robert Renick of whose massacre in 1757 Withers gives an

account in his Border Warfare, tho he spells the name as Renix.

ROBERT was shown as a member of Captian John Smith's Company of Militia,

1742 ( Chalkey 11 page 508 )  On February 19, 1746 he was commissioned

Lt.  of Horse ( Ibid 1 - 53 )  In a serial article in the Kanawha

Register, commencing on September 4, 1829, I find the statement that Capt.

Robert Renick was wonded at Braddock's defeat , and a letter is quoted from

Col. John Stuart, in the Lexington, Virginia Intelligencer, January 13,

1826, in regard to the Bouquet treaty, that Mrs. Renick and children

were restored in 1764, and that Thomas Renick ( should have read Joshua ) ,

son of Robert , settled in Chillicothe, Ohio.  On July 25, 1757, the Indians

made a raid on the Jackson's River settlement, in which Captian Robert

Renick was killed, and his family taken captive ( Chalkey Ohio ) One of his

sons Joshua, remained with the Indians, and died on Lake Earie about 1810, a

Miami Chief.  He is said to have visited his family frequently  (Trans-

Notes for Felix Renick:

From several sources & family papers:

Felix Renick, Ohio pioneer, cattleman, was born in Hardy County, VA a son of William Renick who emigrated from Ireland to America and who became a deputy under Lord Fairfax in the survey of counties in southern Virginia.  His ancestors, according to family tradition, were German.  As a youth Renick with two friends made a trip of exploration into Ohio and investigated the region lying between the Scioto and Licking rivers.  In 1801 he returned to Ohio to settle, purchasing of the government at Chillicothe a large tract of land in Ross County at $2.50 per an acre.  About 1795 he had married Hannah See of Virginia; they were the parents of nine children.  He was interested in children and erected at his own expense on his farm by the turnpike what was long known as the Felix Renick school house.  He was also one of the founders and the first president of the Logan Historical Society and contributed several articles to its magazine, the American Pioneer.

Felix and his brother George Renick became the outstanding agricultural leaders in south central Ohio.  They fed superior cattle for their day and were the first persons to make long overland drives of fa cattle to market.  In 1802 they visited Kentucky and bought a herd of longhorns.  In 1833 forty-six men in Ohio and two in Kentucky organized "the Ohio Company for importing English Cattle."  This company employed Felix Renick to go to England to import some of the best improved cattle of that country.  He sailed in January 1834, made a careful inspection of notable herds, and returned to American with nineteen head of shorthorns.  This included several animals that later became famous progenitors.  In 1835 a second, and again in 1836 a third consignment was brought from England to the Renick farm.  On Oct. 29, 1836, an auction sale of these cattle was held on the farm south of Chillicothe.  Forty-three animals brought $35.540.  This was the most epoch-making cattle sale held in America up to that time.  On Jan. 27, 1848, when in his seventy-eighth year, Renick was killed by a timber falling upon him at the Paint Creek ferry near Chillicothe.  His remains lie in a little family cemetery overlooking the farm.

The smallest State park in Ohio is Renick Memorial State Park, only a few yards in length and width.  The monument commemorates Felix Renick (1770-1848), an early Ohio livestock raiser who inaugurated the overland route to Eastern livestock markets in 1804 by driving his herds over Zane's Trace to Baltimore and other cities.  Renick was the first American to import (1834) full-blooded Shorthorn cattle from Europe, and held the first public sale of the breed in this country not far from the park site.

Renicks Who Went from Hampshire Co, VA to Clark Co, KY

From the information available, we believe the ancestry to be as follows:  George Renick (who came over in 1719) had a son Thomas, who would have been born in the early 1700’s.  Thomas “took up” land in Hampshire Co, VA which was patented to George Renick in 1766.  George is noted as the “eldest son of Thomas”.  There is a genealogy in this section that shows William as the ancestor, but we know the father of John and William of Ohio was William, so we believe Thomas, son of George, to be the ancestor.

                1.  George3 Renick  (Thomas2, George1) was born Abt. 1727, and died March 16, 1778 in Hardy Co, VA.  He married Mary Welton.  She was born Abt. 1730 in Dgtr of John Welton.

“Renicks Who Went from PA to MD, VA, KY, MO & TX”

Thomas Renick came to America from Northern Ireland with his family around 1733.  He is traditionally believed to be the brother of George who came over in 1719.  On March 27, 1738, he took out a warrant for 326 acres in Paxtang Township in PA and also an island in the Susquehanna River opposite this land.  The only known descendant of this Thomas is William.  Thomas was born in Ireland and died in Paxtang after 1744.

William, son of Thomas was born in Ireland in 1704.  It is believed that he married an Ann Hamilton (1716-1806) in 1733, but others have claimed that she was Mary Ann Dugan.  William died before 1763 since his estate was divided on January 5, 1763.

Descendants of William Renick

Generation No. 1

        1.  William2 Renick  (Thomas1) was born 1704 in Ireland, and died Bef. January 05, 1763 in Estate settled.  He married Mary Ann Dugan or Hamilton 1733.  She was born Abt. 1709, and died 1747.

Notes for William Renick:

William is the only known son of Thomas.  He was born in Ireland in 1704.  It has been believed that he married an Ann Hamilton (1716-1806) in 1733.  Others say her name was Mary Ann Dugan.  It may be possible she was known by Ann and had a prior marriage. William died before 1763 since his estate was divided on January 5, 1763. His tract of land was known as "William Renick's place" and was bounded by land of Thomas Dugan on the east, by Patrick Montgomery on the North, and by George Fleming on the west, including a tract of 250 acres of land called Pollock's tract.  He names his wife, Mary and heirs -- seven children.

The "Bausman Collection" at the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania (GSP) Library, Phila has folder with RENICK family Bible. It actually appears to have been kept by the FOSTERs with some Renick dates. Transcription is 1 page typed, and is filed separately as "Bible Records" and not with the other Bausman Collection folder on Renick. No photocopy of original. Bible was acquired in 1769, so many dates were filled in long after the events. What follows below is outlined for clarity, not in original order, and has been formatted to deal with those websites which ruin outlines by stripping out all the blank spaces used to indent.

From:  Mary Miller <dwmiller@flash.net>

About the suit over the feather bed--I thought you'd like to know there was more to it than that.  I'm descended from Leonard Hall, who had a land grant of 1400 acres in Kentucky.  He first settled in Bourbon, where some of his children stayed, then moved to Barren with the younger

children, living near Henry Renick.  Henry Renick and a younger son, Mahlon Hall, were made executors, and when he died, they sold some land Leonard owned in Clark County and pocketed the proceeds--or so the lawsuit goes.  They were brought to court by Caleb Hall, the elder son

who lived in Bourbon. The rest of the 12 Hall kids sided with one side or the other, and it was a mess.  Before it was all over, they all gave depositions.  My Joannah Hall Hardwick finally admitted that a female slave given to her by her father was supposed to be part of her share of his estate.  All the papers are on file in Barren County, and it is a fine example of kids squabbling over an estate.  Leonard would turn over in his grave!  Anyhow, I thought you'd find that of interest--there was more than a feather bed at stake!

Page 55 --  Henry Renick, who lived near the Buck Knob, was the first sheriff of this county.  Richard Garnett, from the law establishing this county, could not determine whether he ought to give an official bond as Clerk of the Quarter Session Court.  He consulted with his father, Judge John Garnett, and they concluded it would be most prudent to give a bond.  Accordingly they prepared and executed one.  Renick being a litigious man, and always in debt, concluded he would bring a suit against Garnett to recover the penalty of three hundred pounds, which the law gave for failing to execute a bond.  He brought suit against Garnett to recover that penalty, thinking no bond had been given; but greatly to his consternation and disappointment, the court dismissed the suit and made him pay the costs.  We have thought proper to give this explanation in order that you may understand the following poetry, composed by Abner Bowen in the year 1799, a copy of which having been sent to us, we now give you in word and figure.

"To describe the pike Buck I mean to do

Keep truth on my side and modesty too.

This stag, I am informed, lives near Buck Knob,

And has lately been striving his neighbor to rob.

I have sued the Clerk of our County,

And three hundred pounds to be my bounty,

And if that my debts won't pay,

I will distance all and run away."

History of Richland Co, WI:

As a youth Lattimore apprenticed to a cabinet maker, then went to St. Louis, then on to Wisconsin about 1841, working at various jobs as a carpenter, and at one time as a miner.  About the year 1844, he was employed to work on the Territorial Capitol building at Madison.  He was later engaged to construct the fluted columns of the Court House at Mineral Point, WI.  He later moved to Richaland County where he built a saw mill for someone, then he bought a piece of property and went into farming.
