Five Hundred Years In America:Information about Christian Bowers, Jr.
Jr. Christian Bowers, Jr. (b. Abt. 1769, d. February 3, 1830)
Notes for Christian Bowers, Jr.:
AGR - I do not think we can discount totally the family tradition that this Bowers descendant being born aboard a ship at anchor in the Chesapeake Bay or some other eastern seaport. It is possible that in the passing down of this folklore the generations were displaced and instead of William "Billy" Bowers being born aboard ship it was actually his grandfather, Christian Jr. As has been the case in other families, oral tradition is a very fragile means of transmitting information over the period of several hundred years.
AGR - Christian Jr. is first found in the 1810 Shenandoah Co, VA census record with his wife and two females less than 10 years old. His household appears numerically close to that of his father in the census so we can assume that they lived near one another.
AGR - A deed from Christopher "Christian" Bowers to the Golden Spring German Lutheran Church, Jan 13, 1825, on record in Green County, TN. (Deed book 20, pg 742) This deed from Christian Bowers for 200 acres was signed in German script. The deed mentions "for and in consideration of having the means of Grace settled in the neighborhood by the preaching of the Gospel" and goes on to define the boundaries. The land was originally a 200 acre survey granted to William Magill by the State of North Carolina.Green County was formed in 1783 from Washington County, TN which had become a Tennessee county instead of N Carolina in 1777.
AGR - An interesting note is the fact that the first two generations of the Bowers family, based on the name listed on the deed, were likely named Christopher Bowers, Sr. and Jr.This is the only reference I have noted to the name Christopher.
