I can't believe it's been two months since I started researching our family on the Internet. Time has whizzed by as I've searched for birth, death and marriage information on Ancestry.com and Rootsweb.com. We now have over 1,000 names in our data base.
Social security records have divulged a huge data bank for us. If a family member was born before social security, we have searched every family tree we can on Family Tree Maker.com, Ancestry.com and Rootsweb.com.
I've learned several shortcuts to obtain a family's children and have mastered typing in all the data in my Christmas present, my Family Tree Maker 8.0. I just recently published a calendar that lists all the birthdays and anniversaries of family members who have been very generous with their information. I like the fact that you know the age of the individual on the calendar and the number of years that the couple has been married.
Adding pictures to the scrapbook in Family Tree Maker has also been a goal of mine. Wouldn't it be absolutely wonderful if we knew what everyone on this site looked like? Since I have three scanners, I want to display as many of our family members as I possibly can. I have successfully used pictures sent to me through email. I just wish all our family had computers, scanners and the Internet.
I sent over 17 letters that will affect over 100 families a week ago and haven't received one back. I enclosed a self-addressed, stamped envelope and all I asked for were vital statistics such as births, deaths and marriages. (Update..three!)
Two of them, my Uncle Franklin Lee Simms, whose last address was Oklahoma, and my cousin, Jessie Bird, whose last address was Oregon, may return their queries, "Return to Sender." Lets just hope I hear from all of them!
I also hand delivered questionnaires for about ten families to my Aunt Eunice in Coolidge. Hopefully, she will encourage her families to fill them out. Thanks to Cousin Vicki I received the four pages of a family Bible to help us find the Bennett and Simms roots.
At this point in my search, I have posted inquiries for the Reynolds, the Simms, the Burrows, the McCarty's, the Bohannons and the Bennett families on Message Boards at Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com and Rootsweb.com. I even posted a message today for lost family members at My Family.com. for Paula and Marjorie Haywood (maiden names) at My Family.com. I have called over 20 Kelleys in California and five Kelloggs in California to try and find our two missing cousins and their families. Marjorie Kelley lived in Sunnyvale, California, and Paula lived in San Jose, California, the last time we had any contact. My Mom, Mary Simms, my Aunt Viola Clark and my Aunt Eunice Earl would love to hear from them. If any one has suggestions of how to find them other than hiring an expensive detective, let me know.
While I'm thinking of it, good health wishes to my Mother, Mary Simms, who had a brief stay in the hospital this month, and our Uncle David Lee Burrows in Galt, California, who has been in the hospital after breaking four ribs in an unfortunate fall. All of us love you! Take care and get well soon!
Since I first hand wrote this early this month, our Cousin Angela Sanchez, unfortunately passed away. I was fortunate enough to attend her funeral with my two brothers, Robert and Kent, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We will really miss you, Angela, but those 17 years of suffering with lupus are over, thank goodness!
Because of the generous help of my two email buddies, Glenna and Charlotte, we have travelled many a mile, so to speak, on our genealogical journey. I am thrilled that we have found the Clyde Alvis Reynolds' family line on the Internet. Between Glenna and myself,we have added every piece of information we could squeeze from willing family members. Then we hit it lucky again with a lead to the Lewis Yancy Bohannon family line.
