Copied from the “History of Noble County” At noon on Monday April 07, 1788, the little party of 47 men landed on the site of Marietta, where they were received by about 70 Indians of the Wyandot and Delaware tribes. Among these colonists were Captain Jonathan Devol, Gilbert Devol, and Allen Devol. October 29, 1798, Governor St. Clair ordered an election to be held on the third Monday of the following December. Elias Langham was elected for Ross County. Around 1817, the Protestant Irish arrived and in 1836, the German settlement began. Ambrose Merry, John Lanam, John Brown, James Ogle, and Richard Duvall among those that signed the formation of Noble County on December 1849- The Act was passed on March 11, 1851. Noble County, the latest formed of the 88 counties of Ohio, lies in the southeastern portion of the state is situated south of Guernsey, west of Belmont and Monroe, north or Washington, and east of Muskingum and Morgan. Territorily, it is amont the smallest counties in the State, having an area of 404 square miles or 258,560 acres. The surface is very hilly with very little wasteland. The soil is largely of limestone formation. Noble County has no large streams. There are three creeks, Buffalo Fork, Seneca Fork and Beaver Fork of Wills Creek. Hupp In 1833, the following persons owned real estate in the eastern portion of Centre Township, Monroe County. John and James Lanam, Section 21, 81 acres $101 Also, Brooks Lanam, John Lanam and Andrew Millslagle Daniel Ackley, Section 31, 60 acres, $65 Jeremiah Brown, Section 5, 80 acres, $105 Jesse Lanam, Section 31, 30 acres, $32 Ambrose Merry, Section 30, 83 acres, $95 George Hupp had five oil wells producing about 40 barrels per day in about 1883. September 1850, John Liming vs. Absolom Willey for fraudulence in horse trading. First Noble County jury found Willey guilty and awarded the plaintiff $13.33. Jacob Fogle was on the jury. Presiding judge November 1851 was Honorable A. G. Brown Nathan B. Wharton married Amelia A. John, daughter of Kinsey and Louisa John, April 27, 1865 Eliza Fogle married Thomas Wiley Reverend Edward H. Taylor, well known Methodist circuit preacher of pioneer days. Son Dr. R. B. Taylor. Dr. William Ross Taylor and Dr. R.S. Brown in drug business (pharmaceuticals) in Summerfield. Glen B. Taylor is Dr. Taylor’s son. Dr. Miles Ogle, first settled physician of Middleburg. Dr. James T.
