Clipping from Noble County newspaper, undated Death - Mrs. Singer, wife of G. W. Singer, of this place, died at her home on North Street (Caldwell), early Monday morning, with a complication of diseases. She had been sick about three months; had almost recovered at one time, and was thought to be out of danger; she took a relapse, but was again thought to be improving. Up to the very last moments of her life she appeared in good spirits and hopeful of recovery, as were also her relatives and friends. At no time was she fretful or complaining; but, on the other hand, was quiet, cheerful and peaceful. During her last illness she asked her husband if he would like to have her sing for him; although he thought it would not be best for her, and at the same time not wishing to suppress her joyous feelings, he replied that it would give him pleasure to hear her sing; so she began and sang with a clear, sweet and steady voice. "Happyday, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away." Mrs. Singer died as she had lived, a Christian lady. she was highly esteemed by everyone who knew her, and had many friends among the white as well as among the colored people. Her grief-stricken husband, family and friends have the deepest sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services were held at the house on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. and the burial took place in the Olive cemetery about noon. Note: I am guessing this obituary appeared in March, 1889 in keeping with other obituary notices in the same column. From an undated Noble County newspaper clipping Died - Mary Ann, wife of A. Boggs, who lives a short distance West of town, after long suffering from Consumption, ended this life on last Tuesday evening at 5 o'clock, and was interred in the Sharon cemetery on Thursday following. Rev. Gledhill, pastor of the M. E. church of Caldwell officiating. Mrs. Boggs was born at St. Andrews, British America, March 15, 1832. Removed from there to Baltimore and thence to this county in 1837. On June 14th, 1849 she became the wife of Alex Boggs. Husband and wife became members of the Sharon Presbyterian church in 1851. She was the mother of 8 children, 7 sons and one daughter, three of whom preceded her to a better land. To the Memory of Mrs. Mary A. Boggs ~~~~~~~~~~~ The following tribute was read before a recent meeting of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Society at Caldwell: It is with sorrow and deep regret we assemble together this evening. After the lapse of a few brief weeks another link is broken in our little band and we mourn the loss of a beloved and honored member; one who had been identified with our Society ever since its organization in 1879, she being our first Vice President. Mrs. Mary A. Boggs, after months of suffering, passed through the portals that lead to the Beautiful City, March 12th, just in the beginning of our new year of 1889. A long life of usefulness and pure influence is closed; the Father hath need of her in His heavenly mansions; she had been a faithful servant, and the Lord called her to her reward. We who have associated with her for many years in Missionary work, feel that we have lost a true and valued friend and helper; she was deeply interested in Missionary work, her voice often being heard invoking God's blessing upon the cause and our little Band. When the hand of affliction was laid heavily upon her, and her seat was vacant among us, she ever remembered our little band of workers, and contributed for the support of the gospel in heathen lands and every good work that came under her notice received her sympathy and co-operation. Those who were in distress, either of body or mind, seemed to be her special charge. We who have been aided by her wise counsels and stimulated by her example, will treasure her memory in our hearts for years to come, and may we consecrate ourselves more fully to the work of our Divine Master. She died as the Christian dies - at peace with the whole word, with the hope of a blessed immortality beyond the grave. She has entered the Celestial City, the door of which is closed to us "yet a little while." We will look no more for her familiar face in our Society, but look away to that city "whose builder and maker is God"; there will be no separation, no death, there. The two sisters (Mrs. BLAINE and Mrs. BOGGS), who have passed away from this Society, have both died in the faith of a glorious resurrection beyond the grave. Let us endeavor to emulate the example of this dear sister, and may her broad mantle of benevolence and Christian charity fall on us who have been so intimately associated with her in Church work. She was one of the eighteen members that constituted our little Church at its organization in 1868. Our hearts go out in deepest sympathy to the stricken family. Only those who have seen the grave close over their nearest and dearest friends can realize the soul-sickening sense of loss that rends the hearts of the bereaved; words are inadequate. To comfort them, we can only pray that the Lord would fold his arms of love and mercy around them and draw their sorrowful hearts nearer to himself, and help them prepare to meet that dear mother in the Heavenly land. While we shed tears of sympathy and love over the grave of our sister may these solemn admonitions teach us the uncertainty of human life and bind our hearts more closely in Christian love, and in the sweet by and by, when the summons comes to us, we may be an unbroken band in that happy land, where so many of our dear ones are waiting to welcome us. -Mrs. M.
