  • The first commecrial greenhouse in Hot Springs (68 KB)
Peter LePatourel established the first commercial greenhouse located in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It was located between Oaklawn Street and Henderson Street. A large pear orchard was located on the Oaklawn Blvd. side with a row of pecan trees planted by Henderson and LePatourel from the alley to Central. Some of these trees are still living and bearing. Peter was from the The Isle of Gurnsey and immigated to the United States in 1876. He first settle in Hope, Arkansas and later move to Hot Springs about 1880. He raised vegetables in the greenhouses for the local hotels year around. Pictured in the center is Peter and to his rigth is his brother-in-law, Roswell B. Arnett. They are standing next to a 17 foot tall cabbage plant, which is 25 years old and still growing. Peter was my 2nd great-grand father and was born June 1, 1851 and died November 15, 1913 while living in Hot Springs.
