Colonial New England, Scottish and Norwegian RootsUpdated May 7, 2006 | The Stirrat family tree goes back to Scotland. The Stirrats came from Ayrshire July 5 1864.They settled in NYC and some of the Stirrats reside there today.The Morrisons arrived sometime before 1852 and settled in Sullivan Co, NY. The Morrison and Stirrat genealogy is under Robert William Stirrat. The Whites can trace the ancestors back to the Mayflower.My grandmother Doris Eva White Stirrat never knew her Whites were prestigious when the high society of Saratoga NY looked down on her for only being D.A.R.Doris Eva White had 8 ancestors who fought in the Revolution, 2 who came on the Mayflower and 1 who gave her a shared lineage with many US presidents back to Charlemagne.Doris' mother's family began with the surname Hoar but in 1831 changed their name to Hobart.They were from Mass. and part of the Hoar family had literary connections in Concord with the Alcotts, Thoreau and others. The Wilsons are still a brick wall for the most part.But my gr-grandmother Eliza Jane Lamoreaux Wilson traces her lineage back to the Huguenots, 3 ancestors who fought in the Revolution- and some gr-gr uncles who were Loyalists too. Andre Lamoreaux is the founder of the family here. Some of the family eventually went to PA.They intermarried constantly with certain families, including the Davenports. My grandmother Grace Palmer's Palmers and Days are brick walls.They may have come from NJ. However, Alfred Day did fight in the Civil War with the 1st NY Mounted Rifles. The Norwegians in the family, came over mostly in the 1870's, but some like the Hunderes and Fladlands arrived in the 1830's in Wisconsin and eventually all the families wound up in northern Minnesota.The lineage includes such good Norwegian names as Tverstol, Johnson, Paulson and Fladland. My husband's Reynolds settled in PA. They originated sometime before the Revolution near Philadelphia but wound up in Northumberland Co.His grandmother's Youngs started out as Jungs in Hunterdon Co, NJ and they migrated by 1803 to Union Co, PA.One Young, Abraham fought in the War of 1812.Hiram Reynolds fought in the Civil War for PA. Most of the families I research are the founding families of many CT towns.Only the Stirrats, Morrisons, and Norwegian families arrived after 1700. |
