Descendants of Hugh Young

3. NANCY3 YOUNG (HUGH2, ???1) was born 1821, and died 14 Feb 1854 in County Londonderry, Ireland. She married WILLIAM WILSON Abt. 1840 in Terrace Row Presbyterian Church, Coleraine, County Londonderry, Ireland2, son of JOHN WILSON and MARY WOODBURN. He was born 1811 in County Londonderry, Ireland, and died 10 Mar 1873 in County Londonderry, Ireland.

ANCY YOUNG:

Notes for W
ILLIAM WILSON:
It is clear from the Huston letters and other documentation that William Wilson married first Nancy Young. She is the daughter of Hugh Young, the sister of John Young, who remained in Ireland, and the sister of Hugh Young married to Martha Wilson who came to the United States in 1850.

In a letter to his mother in Ireland, dated March 28, 1857, John Huston, among other things,

(a) Refers to "Brother William who lost his dear wife Nancy",
(b) States that "Brother John Young wrote to me after father's death, and
(c) States that "Brother John wrote to H. Young about sister Nancy's death". Given the context of this letter, it is fairly certain that the reference is to Hugh Young in Pittsburgh.

As one reads John Huston's letters he refers, in a number of instances to brother and sister in law as brothers or sisters.

Nancy Young died February 14, 1854 in County Londonderry, Ireland. She was buried February 1854 at Desertoghill Parish Burying Ground, Parish of Desertoghill, Barony of Coleraine, County Londonderry, Ireland.

Did William Wilson marry again?

Yes, on December 16, 1854, William Wilson of Ballyagan married Jane Wilson of Dernagross at the Aghadowry Presbyterian Church. Witness(s) for the husband was John Wilson, his father, a farmer, and for the wife, David Wilson, her father and Thomas Forgrave. I do not know the relationship, if any, between the Wilson's of Ballyagan and of Dernagross.

The following is from the gravesite marker(s) at Desertoghill Parish Burying Ground sent to me by Linda Gilmore on October 7, 2001. "Sacred to the memory of John Wilson late of Ballyagan who died on the 6th August 1851 aged 73 years. His wife Mary died on the 2nd April 1865 aged 74 years. And his daughter-in-law Nancy on the 14th Feby. 1854 aged 33 years. Also his son William who died 10th March 1875 aged 62 years. Also his daughter-in-law Jane who died 3rd March 1892 aged 65 years. Also his daughter Margt Ann died 27th August 1893 aged 68 years."

Information on Margaret Marshall Wilson and her descendants was taken from the web site of the Church of the Latter Day Saints from data submitted by Richard Nobel Edwards of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Edwards does not list the parents of either William Wilson or Jane Wilson. He states they were born in Garvagh, Londonderry, Ireland, William about 1831 and Jane about 1833. He does not list their dates of death. William and Jane's date and location of birth is in conflict with the information I have.

When William Wilson married for a second time he was about 41 years of age and had at least four children to his first wife Nancy Young, the youngest being Martha Wilson, born in 1853. She is residing with Hugh and Martha Wilson Young in Pittsburgh in 1880 according to the 1880 Federal Census for Pennsylvania and information from the web site "Historic Pittsburgh". Martha is listed as a niece and as being born in Ireland.

William married the second time to Jane Wilson, within 10 months of Nancy's death. Given the apparent ages of his children this would not be uncommon in Ireland at that time. Margaret Marshall Wilson, daughter of William Wilson and Jane Wilson was born May 12, 1857. I have again reviewed my notes and files and it is clear from the extracts of the birth records that Abigal was born November 4, 1864 and William James was born September 20, 1867. William Wilson would have been about 54 years of age on the date of William James' birth. While this appears somewhat unusual, it appears to be the case. There is also a William Wilson, in Garvagh, who married a second time to a Jane Henderson and should not be confused with William Wilson of Ballyagan. (Note to File - Janet Houston Rhein)

The following was sent to me by John Woods of Christchurch, New Zealand on February 17, 2003. "In 1863 the Ironmongers Company carried out a 'census' of their estate in County Londonderry which named the occupants of each plot of land by townland, with remarks on each". Excerpts from the census for Ballyhaggan (note spelling) follow. "William Wilson [55a. 2r. 12p L32 1s. Wife, seven children, and his mother. Has built a capital lot of offices. Asks for one year's rent to pay towards additional work which he proposes to do." This would include his four children to his first wife, Nancy Young, and three children to his second wife, Jane Wilson. Also his mother, Mary Woodburn Wilson, who died April 2, 1865. There is also a reference to his brother, James Wilson, that states "These two Wilsons are the men who will be likely to take Rankin's land and mill." A David Rankin [16a. 1r 35p] is also listed in this 'census'. \

"Boy's School. [2r 32p] L2. Master (first class), wife, and five children. 71 boys. All very neat and tidy. The dwelling attached to the school. This is the place where the deputation of 1860 ordered an additional room to be built, to which the master has put a boarded floor costing 50s. We agree to allow something towards this."

"Girl's School [20p] 1s. Miss Hilton, mistress; very respectable young woman. 64 on the roll. Everything appears very satisfactory at this school. She hopes that the Company will build her a dwelling adjourning.

Robert Woods further advises "that the 1886 tenants list includes Fanny Clarke, Widow of Robert Clarke. Her maiden name was Boyce (Boice). They originally came from Dunglady, Maghera, but the couple moved to Ballyagan. Some of the Clarkes migrated to Pittsburgh."
The 1863 list includes "Robert Clarke [64a. Ir. 20p.] L41 15s. Wife and six children. A very tidy and good house. Has laboured a rough piece of land since last deputation. Wants us to allow something for having cleared away some cottage buildings and to fence in their commons." According to Ireland Civil Registration Marriages, 1854, Volume 2, Page 218, Registrar's District of Ballymoney, Fanny Boyce, age 21, Spinster of Drumard, daughter of Samuel Boyce, Merchant, married Robert Clarke, age 25, at Churchtown (Presbyterian), Parish of Tamlaght O'Crilly, by license, January 5, 1854, Minister R. Torrens. I have listed it here for future reference.

The 'census' also contains the following. " The mearing ditch between this Townland and Lady Garver's Townland of Bellury ought to be deepened and equalized. Mr. A. to see what the tenants will do toward it. No chance of help from Lady G." (Notes to File - Janet Houston Rhein)
