Descendants of James Wilson

Generation No. 2

2. JAMES2 WILSON (JAMES1) He married JENNET ???.

Notes for J
AMES WILSON:
The August 1818 Visitation Records of the First Garvagh Presbyterian Church, in the Townland of Gortfad, Parish of Errigal, lists a James Wilson and his wife Jennet with the following children; Jane, Mary, Margaret, James, Isabella and Elizabeth. I believe this James Wilson is the brother of John Wilson, father of Isabella, and that Isabella's reference to Aunt Jenny, in her letter to Mrs. Hutchinson, dated September 12, 1852, was to Jennet. (Note to File - Janet Houston Rhein)

Notes for J
ENNET ???:
A very common name. It is the equivalent of modern Janet. Old Scottish text often seemed to spell it Janet. Clearly in the Scot-Irish accent of the time it came out close to Jennet.

This may be Aunt Jenny that Isabella Wilson Huston referred to in her letter of Septembeer 22, 1852. (Notes to File - Janet Houston Rhein)

"DESERTOGHILL, a parish, in the barony of COLERAINE, county of LONDONDERRY, and province of ULSTER, 1 mile (8. E.) from Garvagh; containing 4,701 inhabitants. This parish is intersected by the road from Dublin to Coleraine, and according to the Ordnance survey contains 11,469 1/2 statute acres, of which about 6309 are arable, 2867 pasture, and 2293 bog, or waste land. The soil though thin, is tolerably well cultivated, and produces abundant crops. The inhabitants combine with their agricultural pursuits the weaving of linen cloth in their own houses.

The living is a rectory, in the diocese of Derry, and in the patronage of the Bishop. The tithes amount to 290 pounds. The glebe-house is a small old building an the glebe townland of Meettigan, in the parish of Errigal, which comprises 370 acres, 30 of which are on the southern side of the river, in the parish of Desertoghill, besides a plot of seven acres contiguous to the ruins of the old church. The present church is a large edifice, in the ancient style of English architecture, built in 1784, partly at the expense of Dr. Hervey, afterwards Earl of Bristol, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners have recently granted 227 pounds, 4. 1. for its repair; it stands in the Townland of Moyletra, one mile south of the old church.

In the R. C, divisions the parish is the head of a union or distinct, also called Kilrea, comprising the parishes of Desertoghill, Tamlaght-O'Crilly and Kilrea, and containing three chapels, one here and two in Tarmlaght-O'Crilly. A large and handsome meeting-house is now being built at Moneydig for Presbyterians in connection with the Synod of Ulster.

The parochial school at Ballyagan is supported by the rector; there are two schools under the Mercers Company, two under this Ironmongers Company, one under the National Board, and four others, also a private school."   Notes for ELLEN WILSON:
There is an Ellen Wilson, age 21, place of birth Ireland, listed on the manifest (#900254) of the ship Benjamin Adams, arriving Port of New York, September 16, 1852 from Liverpool, England. She is the only individual named Wilson on the ship's manifest. There was not a Dunlap, Young or a Woodburn listed on the manifest. As Ellen Wilson's date of birth on the Federal Census for Pittsburgh in 1860 was 1835 and the date of birth on the ship's manifest was 1831, it may not be the Ellen Wilson residing with Hugh and Martha Wilson Young in 1860. I have noted it here for future reference. (Note to File - Janet Houston Rhein)
