I know that 'my' Eli Rhoden was born in South Carolina, as mentioned on several census records. I also have come to realize that there were Rhodens in the Texas area 20-30 years before Eli arrived in the mid 1850's. So, I imagine that he followed 'family' there. I discovered early on that South Carolina enticed immigrants from Great Britian and Ireland to settle there with the promise of land parcels for each family member. I do not know what would have enticed Eli and his band, along with other families, to pack up and move from South Carolina to Texas. I have found two other families, the Jesse Bartee's and the John Lowe's who made the migration at the same time to the same destination in Texas. I know that there were vast forests, and that lumber mills abounded in East Texas. Many of Eli's children became loggers and farmers, and were scattered over eight or ten Texas counties, mainly from Tyler county in the East and west to Mongomery County, about 100 miles away. They inter-married with the Bartee's and Lowes, as well as other 'immigrant' families such as the Harvill's and Vestals. Naturally, as the population increased, the diversity of available marriage partners helped the Rhoden line to bloom into many different small communities and towns. The majority seem to have settled into the Polk County area of Texas. Livingston is the county seat, and the small communities of Big Sandy (present day Dallardsville) and Camp Ruby (now only a cemetery and small church) became home to the Rhoden's and the Bartee's and the Lowe's. Their children were born there, and many are buried in wooded cemeteries that have existed since the 1870's. Ironically, Eli Rhoden and his wife Eunice, deeded land for a cemetery at Menard Chapel, and are buried there. We have a tombstone for Eunice, but Eli's marker is no where to be found.
