He married (1) ESTHER LIVINGSTON 10 February 1824 in Morgan County, Alabama, daughter of JOHN LIVINGSTON and MARY CARVIN. She was born 1800, and died 1842 in Lawrence County, Alabama. He married (2) MARTHA AIKEN 20 April 1844 in Morgan County, Alabama. She was born 1816 in Georgia, and died Unknown.

John purchased over 400 acres of land in Lauderdale County, Alabama, located directly south of Giles County, Tennessee between 1818 and 1822.

Callahan (65), farmer, with $1,000 in real estate nd 2,600 in personal property, born in Tennessee as head of household and Susan A. (60), wife, born in North Carolina. In adjacent households are sons William (37) and Ahaz E. (35) with Henry M. (28) in residence. Sarah (23) and Mary (28) are in yet another household two domiciles down, next to Francis Hampton (56) and Noah Hampton (22).
