He married DORIS GLASS MARSH 19 October 1954 in Tyler, Smith County, Texas, daughter of JOHN GLASS and ZELMA HOWE. She was born 12 January 1924 in Mexia, Limestone County, Texas.

ONROE W. JR. RHODES:
Monroe W. Jr. (known as "Dusty" throughout his career) was a Corporal stationed at Camp Hood, Texas i 1942 and 1943 and assigned to the Tank Destroyer Battalion.

He went to work for Humble Oil Company, later to become Exxon, and was a senior accountant when he retired 1 May 1985 in Houston, Texas.

M. W. "Dusty" Rhodes, 77, of Houston, formerly of Tyler, Texas. Born December 22, 1920 in Garrett, Texas, passed away after a courageous battle, on July 15, 1998 in Houston. Dusty dedicated 42 years of service to Exxon. After his retirement in 1985, he became a volunteer for CCHF Thrift Shop. He was a member of Westbury Church of Christ for over 30 years. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Doris Rhodes; (2) daughters: Carol Carpenter & husband, Ed, of Tucson, Arizona and Nancy Schriefer & husband, David, of Houston, Texas; (2) grandsons: Alex Carpenter, of Flagstaff, Arizona and Kyle Carpenter of Tucson, Arizona; brother, Jack Rhodes, of Longview, Texas; sisters: LaRue Carter, of Mineola, Texas and Norma Gabler, of Longview, Texas. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer @ Dairy Ashford. Mr. Bill Love will officiate. Interment will follow in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Drs. William Fleming and Kas Saranathan and the nursing staff of ICU-Unit C of Memorial Southwest Hospital. Also a special thanks to Wanda Mattucci and Buppha Bunchein in the hospital's Plasma Pheresis Unit. In lieu of usal floral remembrances, donations may be made in Mr. Rhodes' name to The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation or to a charity of choice.

Doris was previously married to Joe David march in Stuttgart, Arkansas in 1944. He was a B-17 pilot in the U. S. Army Air Corps stationed in England and was killed in action during World War II. She and Joe David had one daughter, Carol Marsh.

72. NORMA ELIZABETH7 RHODES (MONROE WILLIAM6, SUSAN CATHERINE5 CALLAHAN, HENRY M.4, JAMES S.3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born 16 June 1923 in Garrett, Ellis County, Texas. She married MELVIN NOLAN FREEMAN GABLER 06 September 1942 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, son of OTTO GABLER and MATHILDA WEID. He was born 05 January 1915 in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

ELVIN NOLAN FREEMAN GABLER:
Melvin and Norma met during a Texas "oil boom". In 1934, Mel joined Humble Oil Company (later to become Exxon) in Houston, Texas. In 1936 he was transferred to Talco, where he worked with Norma's dad, Monroe W. Rhodes Sr.. Although he met Norma at that time, it was not until several moves later that their friendship blossomed.

In 1942 Mel took a leave of absence from Humble to join the Army Air Corps. He was stationed at Ellngton Field near Houston for a time, then at Bangor, Maine between 1942 and 1945. Mel and Norma were married in Houston on September 6, 1942, in a church founded by the Gabler family.

After World War II, Mel returned to Humble and the family lived in various Texas towns: Benavides. San Diego, Aqua Dulce, Alice, Mexia and Longview. In 1957 they moved to a 68 acre ranch near Hawkins, Texas. (Mel says 68 acres is only a small farm in Texas).

Melvin and Norma developed an interest in textbook discrepancies upon discovering erroneous information in their children's school books and started a textbook verification enterprise that became world-wide.

Their travels encompassed a lot of the world and their awards range from their selection by the Encyclopaedia Brittanica as two of nine-five individuals, world-wide, who had the most influence during 1982, to the Texas Senate Award of Appreciation for benefitting education. Norma was selected as one of 107 outstanding mothers in Texas history. Mel was a national delegate to the White House Conference on Families. Their many honors include state and national awards from the Sons of the American Revolution and the Congress of Freedom Award (10 times).

They have appeared on these national television network programs:

60 Minutes, Good Morning, America, Nightline, Today, McNeil-Lehrer Report, Crossfire, Donahue (three times), and The 700 Club, plus hundreds of other television and radio programs. Jointly or individually they have spoken to dozens of colleges and universities, PTA meetings, conferences, civic clubs, parent groups and educational conventions. They have spoken in 45 of the 50 states - many times in some times. In 1977 tghe Gablers took a seven-week trip to Australia and New Zealand, where Norma spoke in eight cities in New Zealand and nine in Australia.

Although getting up in years and in semi-retirement, they are still active in these programs.

He married RUTH EVELYN HIGHTOWER 16 February 1947 in Gladewater, Upshur County, Texas. She was born 15 September 1925 in Kosse, Limestone County, Texas.

IRGIL WEBSTER RHODES:
Virgil Webster (Jack) Rhodes served in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and after the war owned and operated a ladies clothing store in Longview, Texas. He was also engaged in investments and real estate. On their 50th wedding anniversary, their children treated their parents fo a Caribbean cruise. Their two daughters, Donna and Lanna, with their husbands and children accompanied them, making the event a real family affair.

Jack is now semi-retired but still visits his office daily, is very active and is an avid supporter of the Baylor Bears, the football team of the Baylor (Baptist) University in Waco, Texas.

Jack and Ruth are also active in their church activities.

She married JOSEPH SANFORD ROTHROCK 18 January 1942 in Mexia, Limestone County, Texas. He was born 03 September 1911 in Walnut Springs, Bosque County, Texas, and died 11 August 1984 in Mexia, Limestone County, Texas.

Bessie was a dutiful wife and good mother to her six children, was active in the First Baptist Church of Mexia, Texas. She was a very sweet and caring lady always ready to help others or to lend words of encouragement.

J. S. was a butcher by profession and worked over the years at Cooper Grocery, Safeway, and other grocery stores in Mexia. He was a devoted father and good provider for his family of six children. Both he and Bessie were long-time Baptists and member of the First Baptist Church of Mexia, Texas.
