| Seeking information on WILLIAM & JOHN RICHARDSON who were in Isle of Wight and Surry Co.s VA. in the early 1600s. The family farmed there until about 1745 when JOHN RICHARDSON moved to Johnston Co. NC. Many of his descendants remain there today. JOHN had three sons and five daughters. The sons are WILLIAM, THOMAS & LEVY. Thomas had one son, APPLEWHITE born in 1753. WILLIAM remained in Johnston Co. and his descendants operated the RICHARDSON MILL for many years. JOHN RICHARDSON built this mill in 1757 and it still is in operation today as the ATKINSON MILL. One of the RICHARDSON daughters married an ATKINSON and the name was eventually changed. Others of this line invented VICKS SALVE and operated that chemical company until 1986 when it was sold to Proctor and Gamble. APPLEWHITE had four sons and seven daughters. The daughters married CHAMBLEES, BUNNS, O'NEALS, HOCUTTS. The sons, SAMUEL married CELAH HACKNEY and WILLIAM BRYANT married UNEY RAY. These two brothers moved south and ended up in Al. in Sumter and Pickens Co.s. The other brothers, JONATHAN and APPLEWHITE II remained in Johnston Co. Both have many descendants there today. Some of the descendants of SAMUEL and WILLIAM BRYANT remained in Ala. while others moved to Freestone Co. Tx. after the civil war. Some remained in Freestone Co. while others moved to Montague Co. Tx. Some of the descendants are still in these areas today. Prominent surnames listed are: APPLEWHITE, BOYD, BROADWELL, BROWN, BUNN, CHAMBLEE, CLARK, DIAL, EARP, HOCUTT, IRBY, IVEY, KNOX, MC DOW, NOWELL, O'NEAL, PRINCE, RAMSAY, RICHARDSON, SNOW, STRAIT, WHITLEY, WILDER, WRENN. In the year 2005 3 family members had DNA testing done. There are matches beginning at Clois Richardson b. 1930 up through Thomas b. 1735 to his father John b. abt 1712. Then down through John's other son, William b. 1734 to Clyde Ernest b. 1920 and H.B. b. 1952. In 2007 another match was found with a descendant of William Richardson (1775-1842) from Johnston Co NC and later Greene Co. AL. This was Lloyd Douglas b.1947 and now living in Hinds Co MS. In 2008 three others came with close matches. They are Billy Richardson of TX. coming through Goin Richardson of Longview, TX. Another was Jack Richardson of Kansas City, MO. Our common relative has not been identified. Still another was Dane Ritcheson of GA. and our common relative has not been identified as yet. In 2009 another close match was found with Stephen Hawke Richards of Australia. No common relative has been found. |
