Generation No. 2

2. SAMUEL R.2 RICHARDSON (JOSEPH1) was born January 01, 1832 in Cincinnati, OH, and died March 14, 1908 in Winchester, KS. He married JULIA FRANCIS JOHNSON November 12, 1854 in Cincinnati, OH.

Notes for S
AMUEL R. RICHARDSON:
He is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Boyle Station, west of Winchester, KS.

Samuel was a farmer and a Civil War veteran, serving in the 20th Army Corps, Company C, 70th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, 1st Brigade, 3rd Division. In the census of 1 June, 1900, he listed his occupation as a capitalist. From obituary records, it is known that Samuel and Julia moved to Clayton, Hendricks County, Indiana in 1856. Remaining there until the fall of 1869 when they moved to Illinois. On March 6, 1872, they arrived in Winchester, Jefferson County, Kansas. They lived on a farm outside the town until 1890 when they moved into a house in the Academy addition of Winchester. The house was situated on lots 1,2 and 3 section A, which is now the corner lots of Rice and 4th streets in Winchester. They lived in this house until their deaths. The original house does not remain.

They were well liked in town as evidence from the obituary columns of Julia: "Remembrance will long dwell in the hearts of all who have spent happy hours in their circle, for the home of "Uncle Sam" and "Aunt Julia" was one of unbounded hospitality.

In the census of 1900, Samuel listed as his assets: "House ($1,000) and animals ($200), two horses and three pigs." At the time of his death, Samuel had $557.80 in the Winchester bank and $5.00 on hand. The sale of his personal property (not including the house) was $567.29. The house remained rented for two years, as stipulated in his will, at $6.00 a month.

Notes for J
ULIA FRANCIS JOHNSON:
Julia is buried in the Spring Grove cemetery also. She moved to Bridgetown, Hamilton County, Ohio in 1848 to live with her sister. Julia fell ill in the 1860's, but bore it with great fortitude, according to her obituary. Beginning in the early 1900's, she was afflicted with a heart disease making her feeble. But all this was borne patiently looking for "that city without foundation whose builder and maker is God." Julia was struck with paralysis on December 24, 1906 at 6:30 PM, while preparing a chicken for Christmas dinner. The paralysis lingered until 10:30 PM January 10, 1907 when "the messenger came and opened the door of her earthly temple and she stepped out into her glorious liberty of those redeemed by the merits of Christ"
