History of Harris Grocery

Fred. D. Harris purchased half interest in the old Neiburg Brothers meat market at 102 S. Webster Rd. (now S. Kirkwood) in the old Kirkwood hotel building. William Neiburg and freed became partners. They later loved to 203 S. Webster Ave. In 1909 Harris bought out Neiburg and the name changed from Neiburg and Harris Grocery to Harris Grocery, moving to the old Masonic building on the 231 N. Webster Ave (Sw corner of Adams, where Berg's Market used to be), and where Kirkwood Bank was located in 1965). In 1920 he moved to 207/209 N. Kirkwood Rd.They had more space here, plus and upstairs for offices. In 1934 Fred remodeled and added black tiling. In 1939, Fred bought out Henry Leupken, and moved to 223 N. Kirkwood Rd. (later Suburban Auto). Son Fred C. took over upon his father's retirement. He moved the store to His son, Fred C. Harris, later moved to SE Corner of East Manchester and Woodlawn. In 1965 was located at 10260 Manchester Road. He later sold it to a Mr. Hirschbeck. Fred rented the store from him, and the store closed in 1974.


The Rott Connection

Francis Harris, son of Fred and Agnes Blankmeier, was born March 23, 1917. They lived at 456 N. Kirkwood Rd (where the Kroger Store was in later years). Francis graduated from CBC in 1934. He worked with his dad at the grocery store at 209 N. Kirkwood Rd. for 2 years. Fred Harris and Fred Rott talked Francis into taking over Rott Hardware Store. Fred agreed to finance him. Francis bought the store September 19, 1936. It was very sucessful. A bicycle shop is located there now.


Henry's background:

Immigrated in 1856. German name Harries. Was a shephard in Germany. Immigrated ca. 1856. He worked as a driver for the grocery firm of Matthais Stoltmann, who had a grocery store at market and LaBeaumont Ave. probably after the war. Henry married Catherine Voss February 21, 1867, and he was first a renter, but later purchased a farm on Doughterty Ferry and ballas Roads, then later bought a farm on SE Corner of 2-Mile Creek and Denny road (Hwy 67), eventually owning 67 acres. It was a truck farm, and Henry sold vegetables from his wagon in Kirkwood. A former protestant, he joined Catholic Church, St. Peter's in Kirkwood, recieved by Father Vandersanden December 25, 1869. Henry was a daily communicant in the church.

Note: Fred David Harris married Agnes November 16, 1904. He was a fine organ player at church, instructed by Rev, Father Lemkes. Lemkes was pastor of the manchester congrgation at the time. Fred built Agnes a house on his father Henry's farm. Stephen Orthwein owns the farm now.
