Delaware Gazette, August 8, 1826; Wilmingtonian, August 10, 1826, Gazette:
"On Friday morning last, of a protracted indisposition, James McKean, Esquire, late First Burgess of this Borough.
"From an intimate personal acquaintance with Mr. McKean, for a number of years, it is our pleasure to be able to testify that he was a man of much worth. He was warm and ardent in his attachments, strict and rigid in the performance of what he knew to be his duty; a decided friend to justice, and, whenever it fell within his sphere, either by his voice or his influence, ever earnest in endeavoring to see it rendered; and although he was much condemned for his severity as a public official, we are decidedly of opinion that the fault was in the laws, and not in the manner in which they were executed; and that the censure was bestowed where it was not merited. If it is proper to have laws, it is proper that they should be enforced, and the man who is sworn to compel an obedience to them so far from meriting censure for requiring a rigid observance, should be applauded for his activity and energy; and when they are found to be oppressive, they should be repealed. It would be well if we had more such magistrates as James McKean was, notwithstanding all that has been said of him; and we are persuaded that the time will arrive when his merit will be duly appreciated, and meet with its reward in the approbation of a discerning public."
