Notes of William Booth Davey; The War Cry, London, January 6, 1881., "Abraham [sic] Davey was born on the 30th March, 1854, at Wivenhoe, a large village near Colchester, Essex. His father and mother were both converted people, but had to do such stout battle with the world with a family of sixteen children on their hands, that they do not appear to have taken any leading part in religious work outside of their own domestic circle...To convey some idea of the domestic difficulties with which the family contended, we will describe young Davey's early days at the time when his father was a farm-labourer, surrounded by 16 young clod-hoppers at a uniform wage of 9s. per week, all the year round..."
