Descendants of George Richards

4. SARAH JANE2 RICHARDS (GEORGE1)14,15 was born March 17, 1840 in PA, and died April 07, 1906 in Allemansville, Gulich, Clearfield Co. Pa16. She married (1) DANIEL SPANGLER Bef. 1867. She married (2) BOWMAN Aft. 1874.

Notes for S
ARAH JANE RICHARDS:
Picture of gravestone gives date of birth and death of Sarah Jane Richards Bowman.
On Sarah's death certificate it lists her father as John Richards of England and mother unknown. If Sarah was the daughter of George and she was born in 1840, she was only Abt. 6 years old when George passed away. John, being the oldest child may have taken the responsibility of raising Sarah, Malinda and Emanuel. Could explain why some of the death certificates of George's children list John as the father.
According to Sarah's death certificate, her mother is listed as being born in England. Father was listed a J Richards and mother's maiden name scratched out and "don't know" written in. She was married at time of death. She is buried next to her husband, Daniel Spangler.

She is found in the 1860 census in Gulich Township, Clearfield County, PA: Spangler, Daniel (25); Spangler, Sarah (20); and Richards, Charlotte (50). According to the biography written about Sarah's brother George -- which was published about 1896 -- Sarah was "wife of James Bowman, a blacksmith, of Allmansville, Clearfield county." (Source: Biographical & Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County Pennsylvania, p. 55.)

In the 1870 census, Gulich Township, Clearfield County, PA: Spangler, Daniel (35); Sarah J. (29); and Levi (3) .

Sarah's brother John married Elizabeth Spangler, who was 24 in 1860 (Source: 1860 census, Beccaria Township, Clearfield County). Elizabeth and Daniel Spangler could have been siblings?

In 1880 Gulich Township, Clearfield County, PA:
Bowman, James J. age 53, blacksmith
Sarah J. wife, age 39, keeping house
Spangle, Levi F. age 13,
Elizabeth I. age 8;
John H. age 6;
Bowman, Andrew J. age 2
William G. age 25
Martin E. age 22
Elizabeth B. age 19
Samuel J. age 17

In the 1910 Census Mira code Index for Penn Pennsylvania, there are a James Bowman (age 68) living with wife Sarah (age 70) and one non-relative. They were in Northampton County.

Notes for E
MANUEL RICHARDS:
Emanuel Richards at 59 years old was 5'11" at 185 #'s with sandy and gray hair with a fair complexion with grey eyes.
Emanuel Richards, first thought to be Nathanel Richards in a family letter written in 1981. However, Dale Britten was researching the older families of Cambria Co. PA and posted Emanuel's obit on the Cambria County site. All the children matched the letter to the obit. Finally, a major break after years of dead end! The names of Emanuel and Nathaniel are very close and could easily be confused in the memory of my elder Richards informant. She was recalling events and names of 50 to 70 years prior. Not many can do that today and be as accurate as she has been.

In this same letter from my Aunt, Emanuel's first wife's name is given as Susan Smith, (which she was found with Emanuel in the 1880 census below) and the second wife listed as Jinny [Linny].

I was searching through some archive records and found a woman who had listed a book belonging to her great grandmother. The book belonged to Mrs. Francis Warner who was widowed with young children. Francis ran a boarding house in Blandburg Pa to support her family. This book was used as a source of keeping track of boarders. I thought it a long shot, but contacted the woman. She replied and shared the information.
** Here is her email received 02/08/03:**
Hi Debra,
I'll have to dig up the book and start posting again.
My GGrandmother was Frances Warner, nee Frank, she was
widowed while her children were very young, she ran a
boarding house in Bburg, there is a hotel in
Lloydsville still standing. She remarried to a Ralph
Edmiston. Her father-in-law was James Warner, he is
the one that I can't find the date of death, I have
him on the 1920 census and his son's obit, who died in
1921, states that he was preceded in death by his
father.
Hopefully, now that things have settled down somewhat
for me, I can get back into research, I'm ready.
these last few years have been very hectic. It's a
whole other story, I should write a book.
Glad to have helped.
Name withheld to protect privacy of author

"Manuel Richards died Feb. 23, 1925" ( The dates match my Emanuel Richards.)
This had been the first time I had seen Emanuel referred to as Manuel Richards.
So I decided to run with it and research the name Manuel Richards also. That is when I found Manuel Richards married Melinda (now known as Emma N. Nevling) "LINNIE" Nevling on 01/04/1893 in Clearfield County Archive marriages. The marriage took place in Madera, Clearfield County. Janet Nevling has been researching the Nevling Family along with Lowell Thomas. Janet and Lowell had Manuel Richards married to Melinda "LINNIE" Nevling with the marriage record of Clearfield County, Pa as 01/04/1893. We already knew that on William Richards death certificate, Linnie is listed as his mother. However, Linnie is not William's mother for she married Emanuel 19 years after William was born. The marriage of Emanuel and Linnie produced three children, Nellie, Fred and Thomas (who may have been the name sake of Linnie's father?)

Obit reads:
Emanuel Richards, 79 , farmer and Civil War veteran, died 23 Feb 1925 at his home in Glasgow, Pa. He was a Private in Company C 13th Regt. Services will be held in the Pleasant Hill UB Church. Surviving children are: John, George, Robert, Fred, Thomas, Christopher, William, Hayes, Mrs. Norman Good, Mrs.Clem Condreit and Mrs. John Steeley; two half sisters Mrs. Daniel Hollen and Mrs. John Dixon; 72 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. (Altoona Tribune, Feb 27,1925 sent to me by Dale Britten.)

The the only information we have on parents is conflicting:
Death Certificate of Emanuel Richards:
On Emanuel's death certificate he was widowed, his father's name is given as JOHN while his mother's name is unknown. The father is also listed as being born in Pa. Information on death certificate was given by Emanuel's son William.
[Author's note *It is quite possible that John raised Emanuel following the death of their father, George in 1846. Emanuel was only a few months old at the time of George Richards death.]

*According to the Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County; Emanuel is listed as the child of George Richards of England [Ireland] and Charlotte Bellman [Belman] of Tioga County PA.

*A Petition Filed in Orphans Court by Charlotte Bellman Richards also has Emanuel listed as a son.
Petition in the Orphans Court:
On the 28th day of Aug. 1871 Charlotte Richards filed petition in the Orphans Court of Cambria County to divide the land between herself and her children. The land is described in territory and 433 acres and which land had several coal banks opened thereon at the death of said George Richards. The children are listed as follows: John Richards, Geroge B. Richards, Mary Anne married to Jacob Burg, Sarah Jane married to Daniel Spangler, Malinda married to Isaiah Haines, Hannah married to Perry Harkins, and EMANUEL Richards. Charlotte was to have one equal third part of the estate. And to the children the remaining two-thirds were divided up evenly among the seven children.

Service Record:
Emanuel Richards: Enlisted as a Private on 23 March 1864 and Mustered out on 14 July 1865 in Raleigh, NC.(History of Pennsylvania Volunteers,1861-1865. (PA Roster)Published in 1870)
Emanuel was a Private in Co. C, 13 Regiment of the PA Cavalry. He enrolled at Hollidaysburg, Blair County, PA on March 23, 1864 and was honorably discharged at Raleigh, North Carolina on July 14, 1865. The rolls show him present during that time, except for October 23 to December 28, 1864, when he was sick in the hospital with a fever and chronic diarrhea. He was returned to duty. Information given on his pension application shows that he was 5' 9" tall; with a fair complexion; blue eyes; light-colored hair; and that his occupation was laborer. After leaving the service he lived in Philpsburg, PA for yrs; Curwensville, PA for 3 yrs; and Madera, PA for 10 years; remainder in Blandsburg, Cambria County Pa. When he completed his Declaration for Pension on October 5, 1908, he was a resident of Blandburg, Cambria County, PA. [Source: NWCTB- Pension Soldier's Certificate # 838802] I have the complete civil war service record on this individual.

Altoona Mirror, Feb 10,1915 (Lloydsville): Dewey Richards of Lovett is home visiting her [his] grandfather, Emanuel Richards.

Altoona Mirror, April 15, 1914 (Lloydsville): Miss Nelly Richards of Osceola Mills came home Saturday due to the illness of her father, Emanuel Richards. Christ,Richards & brother William of Osceola Mills were here last week visiting their father, E M. Richards.

After his death, Emanuel's son, William, filed an Application for Reimbursement with the U. S. Pension Office for reimbursement of expenses in connection with Emanuel's last sickness and burial as follows: $1.00 due to Dr. Roy W. Goshorn, who last attended Emanual; $2.00 to Dr. S. C. Gearhart, for medical attendance; $205.00 to C. Jay Trexell, the undertaker; $8.00 to Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association for preparing the grave.

Burial: February 25, 1925,at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow, Reade Township, Cambria County Pennsylvania.

Census Records Found:

In the 1850 Census, for White Township, Cambria County, PA,
Burge, Jacob age age 25
Burge, Mary Ann age 17
Richards, Sarah age 13
Richards, Hannah age12
Richards, Emanuel age 5

In 1880 Census Clearfield Co. Pa

Susan J. age 31 housekeeping
John W. age 13 son
George age 10 son
Christopher age 8 son
William age 6 son
Rutherford B age 4 son
Newton E. age 8 son the 8 appears to be over a 2 then next to it written Oct. ?
My Great Grandfather, George, was born in 1869, so this is a very close census record.

In the 1910 Census Cambria County, PA
Richards, Emanuel age 53
Fred, son, age 16
Nellie, daughter, age 13
Thomas, son, age 11
William, son, age 33
Effie, daughter, age 28 (correction, daughter in law)
Dewey, grandson, age 12 (son of Effie and William)
*Author's note: The 1910 Census leads me to believe that Melinda, Emanuel's second wife, died prior to this census. In addition, Emanuel's death certificate of 1925 states he was widowed.

In the 1920 Census Reade Township, Cambria County, PA
Richards, Emanuel, age 73, laborer (Emanuel should have been 63)
Fred, son, age 26, laborer
Brown, Grant, boarder, age 47, coal mine

The information you have just read is what we have found during our research. It is what we believe to be our ancestors. We have the letter from my Aunt, along with an Obits of Emanuel and his son Geroge B. Richards, Emanuel's pension records, death certificates and various court records. Along with census records. The information as a whole is what we have based our assumption. You will need to make your own assessments.

On the marriage license for Emanuel's second marriage to Emma Malinda Nevling, it states that his first wife [Susan] died August 26,1892. This is where we have obtained the date of death for Susan Smith Richards.

According to Alexander Cemetery Records, there is no record of Susan Richards or Susan Smith being buried at this cemetery as stated by another researcher.
That same researcher has no cemetery infomation listed under the name of Susan Smith, yet she claims Susan is buried in Alexander Cemetery. She has that information listed under the notes of an Infant Richards.
These are the Richards buried in Alexander Cemetery:

Notes for E
MMA MALINDA NEVLING:
Russ Hippo had found the Emma Nevling and the date of marriage to "Emanuel Richards". Janet and I found Manuel Richards married to Melinda Nelving. Both had the same dates of marriage. But it wasn't until Janet made reference to Melinda as Linnie that I knew we had our correct wife. Now how the name Emma came about, we really aren't sure. Some people may have referred to her as Emma, while family members referred to her as Linnie. Or, it could have just been transcribed incorrectly, like Emanuel's name on the records we found.
04/12/03**** I just received the Marriage License for "Emma N. Nevling" and Emanuel Richards. Bride's name clearly states Emma N. Nevling and her father is listed as Thomas Nevling, (mother is not listed for the bride). Emanuel's parents are listed as George and what looks like Emma, clearly not Charlotte. Sends us all searching again, or the person filling out the document made a mistake with Emanuel's mother's name.

Email from a Nevling Family Member:
Hi Debra,
I see that you will have to change some of the entries about Malinda Nevling. I
believe you have her entered as Emma. I have the marriage date, in
Madera, of 4 Jan 1893, but now I cannot find this information in the list of Clearfield County Marriages which we got at the courthouse in Clearfield last September. But the marriage date makes sense with regard to the three children you have, i.e., Fred, b. 1894, Nellie, b. 1897, and Thomas, b. 1899. Melinda was born in 1858, so she had that last child when she was 41. Do you have a
death date for her? You seem to indicate that she died before Emanual
did in 1925. [authors note: Emanuel's death certificate states he was widowed] I have looked at the Pleasant Hill cemetery site and
found Nevlings and Scotts. Her brother Fillmore and his wife Mary Ann
Emigh are buried at Pleasant Hill, and her brother-in-law, John Wesley
Scott and other Scotts are also buried there. The family must have
been centered around Glasgow. The father and mother, Thomas Nevling
and Caroline Palmer Nevling, had 300 acres of land in Gulich Twp in
1878 which they inherited from his father John Adam Nevling, but one
son, John Adam Nevling was hanged for murder in Clearfield in March
1882. I don't know whether the siblings moved to Cambria County before
or after this time. Father Thomas Nevling also is said to have died in
1882. Mother Caroline is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Clearfield.
I have been quite fascinated with the Thomas Nevling family. Malinda
was born in 1858 as she is listed as 2 years old on the 1860 census.
That's all for now. You certainly do have a great many Richards in
your list. Wow!!!
Congrats on being such a good detective.

Janet

This is what was written on the inside cover of the book of Francis Warner:

Infant Richards, who died September 6, 1892 in Madera Township, Clearfield County, Pa. Place of interment, Alexander Cemetery. Buried on September 8, 1892. Charge for the funeral was $18.25; $16.00 for the casket and $2.24 for a robe. Susan [Smith] Richards died on August 26, 1892 which the family has stated was due to child birth. This child would likely be the child she was delivering at time of death.
It is thought this child to be buried in the Alexandria Cemetery of Madera Township, Clearfield County, Pa. However, there is no record in Alexandria Cemetery to support the funeral card found. It is possible that the headstone is no longer standing.
Another reseacher, (unrelated to this family) states that Susan Smith Richards is also buried in Alexander Cemetery. Here is the list of Richards buried in that cemetery. None of which are Susan. If she is in fact buried in this cemetery, she does not have marker.
