He married JANET ROBERTSON October 24, 1824 in Parish of Barony, Lanark, Scotland, daughter of ALEXANDER ROBERTSON and ELIZABETH ROBERTSON. She was born March 24, 1796 in Neilston, County of Renfrew, Scotland, and died July 28, 1869 in Baldovan Village, Strathmartine, County of Angus, Scotland.

Her record of death can be found on page 4 of 1869 Deaths in the Parish of Strathmartine, County of Angus, Scotland; The record states the following:
Janet Steel (widow of John Steel, road laborer) on July 28, 1869 at 1hr. and 15 mins. PM died at Baldovan Village, Strathmartine. Her age is recorded as 75; She was the daughter of Alexander Robertson, Lint Miller, (deceased) and Elizabeth Robertson, ms. Robertson; cause of death was old standing heart disease as cert. by James Christie, M.B.; Informant for this record was Alexander Haggart, son-in-law, present. The death was registered on July 28th, 1869 at Strathmartine, by John Simpson, Registrar.

Steele, John and Janet Robertson residing in Neilston had a natural daughter born on the fourteenth of June 1820 & baptised 23 December 1843 named Janet.

Margaret Haggart, widow of Alexander Haggart, Estate laborer, April 6th, at 5hrs. and 9mins.; daughter of John Steel and Janet Steel, ms. Robertson. She was 75 yrs old when she died of Heart disease she suffered six months and chronic bronchitis for six months as cert. by J.S. Bolten?. Informant on this record is David Stuart, Lodger. Record was registered 04/10/1899 by John Wash, Registrar

Marriage Notes for MARGARET STEELE and ALEXANDER HAGGART:
In the Parish of Strathmartine, County of Angus Scotland the record of marriage can be found on page 1.
On July 24th, 1863 After the bans according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland; Margaret Steel who was 41 yrs old and residing at Stillarys, Strathmartine married Alexander Haggart who was
a 60 yr. old widow; agricultural laborer. Margaret was a linen weaver, spinster. Margaret's parents are recorded as John Steel, road laborer (deceased) and Jessie Steel, ms Robertson. Witness' to this marriage were John McGregor and Donald Ritchie, Registered by John Simpson, Registrar

Note that Margaret's mother in this record is recorded as "Jessie" where all other records found have her recorded as Janet Robertson.
