Charlotte Bellman (b. December 1813, d. Aft. 1900)
Charlotte Bellman (daughter of Jacob Bellman and Charlotte ??)18, 19 was born December 1813 in Tioga Co. Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1900. She married George Richards on Bef. 1833.
Notes for Charlotte Bellman: Charlotta Bellman was the daughter of Jacob and Charity Farley of Tioga County Pennsylvania. Charlotte married George Richards Abt. 1833 to which marriage produced seven children. It is thought by some that Charlotte had three more children after the death of George Richards. Those three children were born out of wed lock to the best of our knowledge. Of those three children, only one was recognized by Joseph Miller to be his daughter. That child was Sevilla Miller, whose mother was Charlotte Bellman Richards.
Other researchers who state they have placed all the information online to assist others, has Charlotte Bellman's first marriage to Joseph Miller. That information is totally incorrect. Charlotte was married first to George Richards and bore him seven children prior to his death in 1846.
Daughter, Sevilla Miller, can be found in the 1860 census with her half-brother John Richards. Perhaps David Richards was also a child of Charlotta and Joseph Miller? He was nine months old when the census was taken, but his father had died in 1846. Joseph Miller did "recognize" Sevilla as his child because she was given the name Miller and she is listed in his Will.
In the 1850 Census, White Twp., Cambria County, Pennsylvania: Miller, Joseph, age 39 farmer Meany? age 13 Margaret age 11 Peter, age 9 George, age 7 Sarah, age 4 Richards, Charlotta, age 36 Both parents born in Pennsylvania Sarah J., age 8 Melinda, age 6 David, age 9 mths. (Raises the question, whose son was David, George Richards died in 1846.)
In 1860, Gulich Twp. Clearfield Co. Pennsylvania Charlotta was living with her daughter Sarah Jane, who at that time was married to Daniel Spangler: Daniel Spangler age 25 Sarah age 20 (Sarah was age 18 in the 1850 census) Charlotte Richards age 50 ( Charlotta was age 36 in the 1850 Census) Elizabeth C. Bellman-[ thought to be Charlotte's daughter, father unknown).
Petition in the Orphans Court On the 28th day of Aug. 1871 Charlotte Bellman filed petition in the Orphans Court of Cambria County to divide the land between herself and her children. The land is described in territory and 433 acres and which land had several coal banks opened thereon at the death of said George Richards. The children are listed as follows: John Richards, Geroge B. Richards, Mary Anne married to Jacob Burg, Sarah Jane married to Daniel Spangler, Malinda married to Isaiah Haines, Hannah married to Perry Harkins, and Emanuel Richards. Charlotte was to have one equal third part of the estate. And to the children the remaining two-thirds were divided up evenly among the seven children. [I have the copy to this petition if any one would like a copy.]
In 1880, she was living with a daughter, Mary E. and her husband Henry Stine age 31; Mary C. age 28; Mary C. age 1; and Charlotte Richards age 67. This is from the 1880 Logan Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania census.
1900 Census: Dixon, Josiah age 50 Elizabeth wife, age 48 and one child whose name is unknown; David I. Dixon, son age 1 Charlotta Richards mother-in-law age 86 Josiah and Elizabeth had been married 16 years Elizabeth was the mother of 6 children, only 3 of whom were still living. Josiah, Elizabeth and the first child are shown on the bottom of a page, which is very difficult to read. Elizabeth's husband's name was actually Isaiah Dixon, but spelled in this census record as Josiah.
According to Charlotte's son Emanuel's obit, he had two half-sisters surviving him named Mrs. Daniel Hollen and Mrs. John Dixon. We now know that Mrs. Daniel Hollen was Elizabeth and suspect that Mrs. John Dixon was Sevilla Miller. They were probably daughters Charlotte had after George Richards' death, making them half-sisters to Emanuel.
