John was a coal miner. Both of John's parents were born in Pennsylvania; Mary Ann's father was born in Ireland; her mother was born in Pennsylvania. They were living next door to their son Allen.

John and Mary Ann are both buried in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery (Methodist Episcopal) in Long Branch Borough, Roscoe, Washington County, Pennsylvania. This was the site of the Friends' Fallowfield Monthly Meetings from 1799 to 1840 in a log meeting house built in 1799. In 1844, the house was abandoned and then was occupied by John Biles as a residence. In 1849, the property was sold to Cornelius McKenna, who donated part of the land to the Methodist congregation.
