Robert was the eldest child of Nathaniel and Julia Richardson. He married Rebekah Ensell in 1831. Robert became one of the founding fathers of the Disciples of Christ movement. His father nearly disowned him for his conversion but later reconciled at the birth of Robert and Rebekah's first child, Nathaniel II.
